w h a t i s c o n f l i c t ?? • A problem faced by a character. • It is a STRUGGLE between OPPOSING characters or forces. • There are EXTERNAL and INTERNAL conflicts. • EXTERNAL: some outside opposing force (another person for example) • INTERNAL: opposing emotions within the mind (or heart) of the character • Let’s take a look at the 4 types of conflict…
Character vs. Character (Man vs. Man) • External Conflict • A struggle between one character and another • Example: an argument with your boss
Character vs. Nature (Man vs. Nature) • External Conflict • A struggle between a character and something in nature… can be an animal, unless ALL characters are animals, or natural disaster (ex. Hurricane) • Example: Dorothy, in the Wizard of OZ, stuck in the tornado heading to OZ
Character vs. Society (Man vs. society) • External Conflict • A struggle between a character and a group of people • Example: Court Case or Witch Burning…
Character vs . Self (Man vs. Self) • Internal Conflict • A struggle within the character’s mind • Example: “Should I tell someone how I really feel?” • Should I or Shouldn’t I?
Character vs. Supernatural • External Conflict • Someone is in conflict with a ghost, alien or unexplainable thing.
N o w I t ‘ s Y o u r T u r n • Write down the four types of conflict, and list out your own personal example for each. • Has to have happened in the past month! You need to write down an example even if you can’t remember one.
