  1. Carbon-based Life • All life forms are based on the bonding properties of the element Carbon • The molecules involved in suppporting life are called Biomolecules • Element: Smallest particles of matter • Molecule: Made up of a number of elements H2O molecule made of hydrogen and oxygen.

  2. Proteins- DNA Composed of Amino Acids Chemical signals Enzymes- Help reactions accur Food sources: Fish meat eggs dairy product soy proteins are building blocks of our bodies. Molecules of the Cell

  3. Protein structure • DNA and other proteins in your body are made from only 20 amino acids • The order in which they form determine their shape and therefore how they function

  4. Food Sources: Fatty meats butter oil Fats • Construction: Carbon chan, hydrogen and oxygen • Fats store energy for later use • Fatty tissues cushion your organs and provide your body with insulation. • Support body functions Saturated- Solid: Straight chain.. Butter animal fat Unsaturated – Liquid: oil Bent chain

  5. Sugars from Carbohydrates: C6 H12 O6= chemical formula • Carbohydrates are composed of sugars • Simple sugars give quick energy • Most common sugar: • GLUCOSE • OSE= sugar • Food Sources: Fruits fruit juices, candy

  6. All are Necessary • ATP is a an energy molecule • What do fats, proteins and carbohydrates have to do with energy? • They all break down into molecules that provide energy.

  7. Thinking about what we have read • How are fats similar to sugars? • What are both made of? • Hydrogen carbon and oxygen • Provide energy

  8. Sugars • What is starch? Chain of glucose molecules: a carbohydrate • What is glycogen? Chain of glucose stores energy in liver + muscles carbohydrate • Pasta is a starchy food – why might we eat pasta before a marathon? Starch is broken down slowly to release the glucose like a time release system.

  9. Constructing and breaking Down • Hydrolysis- Addition of water (h2o) breaking down molecules requires the addition of water • Dehydration reaction- removal of water making a molecule remove water molecules.

  10. glucose glucose glucose Water added Hydrolysis Makes a molecule
