  1. The Universe And Light Years Pictures provided by Hubble Space telescope unless other wise noted.

  2. A light year??? Does anyone know what a light year is? A light year is the distance that light can travel in one year.

  3. Galaxies within 500 million light years of Earth

  4. Light Year A unit of DISTANCE (length).

  5. Light Years We use light years because a kilometer is just not big enough. • The Andromeda galaxy is the nearest galaxy • The nearest galaxy is 21,800,000,000,000,000,000 km • It is 2.2 million light years from us.

  6. Well you might ask…how fast does light travel? First, I get to ask a question…which travels faster light or sound?

  7. Light travels at a speed of: 300,000 kilometers per second so if we to know how far it travels in a year… So 300,000 km/sec x 60 sec/min x 60 min/hr x 24 hr/day x 365 days/year that is: 9,460,000,000,000 kmper year

  8. Light travels at a speed of: For those of us that are still using standard measurements and kilometers doesn’t really mean anything…here you go. 186,282,397 miles/sec or 5, 865,696,000,000 miles/year

  9. Light years • A light year is a unit of distance, NOT time. • A light minute and a light second are units related to the light year • A light minute is equal to 17,987,547 kilometers • A light second is equal to 299,793 kilometers • The Moon is 1.2 light seconds away from Earth

  10. Light Years • Our entire Solar System out to Pluto is only one eight-hundredth of a light year across • The distance to our nearest neighbors, Alpha Centauri and Proxima Centauri, is 4.3 light years The Solar System

  11. Light Years • Our Milky Way Galaxy is 100,000 light years across • The distance to our nearest galaxy, the Andromeda Galaxy, is 2,100,000 light years • Recently the Universe has been calculated to be at least 156 billion light years across Milky Way Galaxy

  12. Sound on the other hand travels a little bit differently than light. It still travels in waves, however, the medium it travels through makes a difference in the speed of the sound. Sound travels through dry air at 20oC at the speed of 343 m/s

  13. Light Years • Nearest star is 4 light years from our Sun. • Light travels at 186,000 miles/second • Light from the sun reaches the Earth in 500 seconds or 8 minutes and 33 seconds. • Therefore, our distance to the Sun is 0.000158 light years from the earth.

  14. Light Years • The moon is 0.0000000406 light years (238,000 miles).

  15. So which is it? Light or Sound Light Of course you now know that it is light correct! Light actually travels 900,000 times faster than sound.

  16. Light Years • How long would it take the space shuttle to go one light year? If the shuttle could orbits the Earth at 20,000 mph it would need about 33, 502 years to travel one light year. THE UNIVERSE IS A BIG PLACE!
