  1. Canadian Magnetometry for THEMIS: CANOPUS Magnetometer Array Update Ian R. Mann, D.K. Milling, A. Kale, I.J. Rae, T.M. Loto’aniu Dept. of Physics, University of Alberta, CANADA. D.D. Wallis Magnametrics, Ottawa, CANADA. I.R. Mann e-mail: imann@space.ualberta.ca

  2. Upgrades to Existing Canadian CANOPUS Magnetometer Array GILL: 8Hz • Current 13 magnetometer array stations being updated with new GPS-timed data loggers. • Upgraded magneometer cadence to storage of full raw 8 Hz resolution 3-component fluxgate data (strong signal to 2Hz; filter reduced between 2Hz and Nyquist). • Real-time collection via CGSM High-Speed Internet VSAT connection. • Baseline 1s standard data product for real-time collection and distribution. • Planned for 8 Hz data available from CANOPUS Magnetometry site via Canadian Space Sciences Data Portal (SSDP). • Pc1, PiB waves etc seen by 8Hz data set. Future work required to determine full capabilities. • Upgrade completion by September/October 2005. FSMI: 8Hz

  3. Expanded CANOPUS Array • Deployment of 15 new fluxgate (1s standard data product; 8Hz raw). • Deployment of 8 new induction coil magnetometers (baseline 40 Hz). • Emphasis on lower-auroral and mid-latitudes. • Completion by 2008. • Also real-time data VSAT/internet satellite data collection.

  4. Induction Coil Design Determined • S/N and sensitivity of Korepanov (Lviv Institute, Ukraine) designed LEMI-30M induction coil excellent (including mains power notch). • Performs better than other available and field-heritage instruments. • Tests of coil response were excellent and matched “advertised” performance complete. • First coil pair on order. • Pc1, Pi1B well resolved, even at low amplitude and higher frequency. • Schumann resonances also easily seen.

  5. Current Status: Test Site at Ministik (Edmonton) • Test site established 40 km from Edmonton at Ministik (U. Alberta/Elk Farm). • New GPS-timed logger developed and being field tested. • Initial tests of baseline Induction coil magnetemeter coils complete. First system on order from Lviv Institute in Ukraine (V. Korepanov). • Complete system also magnetic noise-tested. • Long-time base fluxgate HSi connection continuing.

  6. Current Status: Real-time Data Retrieval Monitoring • Web-based monitoring of magnetometer data packet receipt for both old and new systems. • 8Hz RT data from FCHU, MCMU, FSMI and EDMO. • Will be used for forwarding real-time CANOPUS data to THEMIS data centre at UCB, as well as reciept of RT THEMIS GBO magnetometer data. • About to start test-bed data THEMIS magnetometer data transfers.

  7. Summary • CANOPUS Magnetometer Array upgrade program continuing well: • GPS timed data loggers (to prevent link data loss) developed. • Compression and satellite link software complete • CANOPUS Mag. cadence to be upgraded to raw 8 Hz. • Upgrades installed and new system real-time feed from several (4) sites • 1s and 8Hz real-time data products from existing13 sites by Sept/Oct 2005. • CANOPUS Magnetometer Array expansion continues: • prototype induction coil systems (coils and logger) tested • awaiting delivery of initial IC field model • IC to be deployed at some existing CANOPUS sites when maintenance convenient • Delivery of FGM from Narod Geophysics Ltd will allow work on new station installation to begin. • New data streams at 40 Hz, 8 Hz, and 1Hz will provide excellent data set for THEMIS science (current systems, SCW location, Pi2 timing, Pc1 and Pi1 waves etc) across wide latitudinal and longitudinal range in Canadian sector.

  8. Facilitation of THEMIS Science Pc waves, Pi2 and PiB timing and science Tail Current sensing SCW Location • New data streams at 40 Hz, 8 Hz, and 1Hz will provide excellent data set for THEMIS science (current systems, SCW location, Pi2 timing, Pc1 and Pi1 waves etc) across wide latitudinal and longitudinal range in Canadian sector.
