  1. Energy Basics What is the “Best” lighting

  2. “Sic Semper Tyrannis”

  3. What is the “BEST” Lighting? The right light levels, at the right location, for the lowest cost

  4. I have to save $ in my building, NOW WHAT? • Lighting Technologies • Fluorescent • High Intensity Discharge • Solid State (LED) • Lighting Controls • Lighting Design • Lighting Maintenance

  5. Comparative Analysis

  6. Greatest Thing since Thomas Edison? YES? NO? MAYBE?

  7. The “BEST” measures for a lighting system? • Approximately 50% of the equation for light levels is the lumens/watt. • Approximately 50% is the environment those lumens sit in. • What are the some other factors? • Cost • Lamp life • CRI/K temp • Heat

  8. “BEST” Lighting • T8!! • Lowest cost • Great energy savings • Flexibility • High burn hours • Legacy • Yes, they still have mercury. • Very low depreciation

  9. LED? • Still dealing with high cost • Efficacy is improving almost weekly, lm/watt continue to rise. • Physics say it could get to 260 lm/watt, then we have REAL energy savings. • Creates a legacy problem • Great for dimming. • Relatively low environmental impact. • Still dealing with BAD manufacturers and marketers.

  10. LED Marketing

  11. Effective Controls Turn the D#$& LIGHTS OFF! Simple occ/vacancy sensors Use Daylight, IT’S FREE! Dimming, comfort and personal preferences raise costs, evaluate carefully! Can’t manage what you don’t measure, but measuring and not managing is STUPID!

  12. TRAINING • Recent EE program test took place for K-12 in GA. • Program took and existing training package, Building Operator’s Certification and applied it to K-12. • First reported results, 6 months • 72% posted data • Savings, $124,000+(spend was $30,800) • Training PAYS for itself!
