  1. Introduction • Define Global Warming • Greenhouse Effect • The Father of Global Warming • Protagonist views • Al Gore • Research and Data • Antagonist views • Climate-gate

  2. Global Warming • The worldwide rise in average surface temperatures • Thought to be caused by the Greenhouse Effect

  3. The Greenhouse Effect The ability of gases in the atmosphere to slow down the release of heat into space at night

  4. Greenhouse Gases

  5. The Greenhouse Effect It is essential to life! Other wise it would be 225°F in the day & -243°F at night.

  6. The Greenhouse Effect The burning of fossil fuels increases the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere

  7. Other variables

  8. The Father of Global Warming Columbia University geochemist Wally Broecker is thought to be the father of Global Warming

  9. PROTAGONISTS

  10. Al Gore • Host of the film “An Inconvenient Truth” • Former Vice President of the United States • Two time Presidential Candidate (1988 and 2000) • Nobel Peace Prize Winner • Took the initiative in creating the Internet

  11. Al Gore on Global Warming Global warming, along with the cutting and burning of forests and other critical habitats, is causing the loss of living species at a level comparable to the extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. That event was believed to have been caused by a giant asteroid. This time it is not an asteroid colliding with the Earth and wreaking havoc: it is us." — Al Gore

  12. Mapping out temperature change From: http://www.global-greenhouse-warming.com/graphs-diagrams-of-global-warming-and-climate.html

  13. Carbon Dioxide Allows sunlight and heat into the atmosphere, but doesn't let it get out, causing the Earth to heat up. So what about the other gases?

  14. Methane • That remains in the atmosphere for approximately 9-15 years. • Methane is over 20 times more effective in trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide (CO2) over a 100-year period. • Emitted from a variety of natural and human-influenced sources. With the planetary effects of long-term human negligence exposing itself more and more everyday, experts are now experimenting with cow farts and burps in an attempt to curb global warming.

  15. Cows – get them before they get you! It’s not animal cruelty if you are saving the planet. Certain environmentalists want to tax farmers and ranchers for the total number of cattle they own to offset their Methane output.

  16. Nitrous Oxide • Nitrous Oxide (N20) is clear, colorless gas • Lifetime of N2O is 120 years • It’s heat trapping is 310% more than CO2 • Removed by photolysis • N2O has natural and human-related sources • Some Sources include: • Agricultural soil management • Mobile and stationary combustion of fossil fuel • Adipic acid & nitric acid production • Biologically • 60% of N20 is natural

  17. ANTAGONISTS

  18. Current Views • The global temperature has risen 0.6° ± 0.2 °C. • More evidence shows increase in CO2 and Methane. • If we continue the temperatures will increase 1.4°C to 5.8°C in the next 100 years and include more extreme weather.

  19. Antagonistic Views • IPCC Data is inaccurate • Warming is natural • Cause of warming unknown • Warming has few negative effects

  20. IPCC data is inaccurate Climate-Gate Controversy: • Unethical Graph • CRU’s data base was hacked in late 2009. • Included over 160 MB of emails, documents, and research. • Lacked research to create an accurate report. Ethical Graph Antonino Zichichi-- Emeritus professor of nuclear physics at the University of Bologna and president of the World Federation of Scientists

  21. Responses • Email - “The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t.”(Revkin, A C.) • IPCC 2007 - ”Is one that holds under a variety of approaches, methods, models and assumptions, and is expected to be relatively unaffected by uncertainties.”(Henig, J.) • NY Times - ”They seem so focused on winning the public-relations war that they exaggerate their certitude — and ultimately undermine their own cause.”(Tierney, J.)

  22. Warming is natural • Solar Cycle chart Khabibullo Abdusamatov, -- Mathematician and astronomer at Pulkovo Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences

  23. Unknown 25 • “Portrayed that there isn’t a major catastrophe or death knell hanging before the world, but rather a comparison of loosely based ideas of climate models and the changes in CO2 levels which are uncertain hypothesis.” John Christy -- Professor of atmospheric science and director of the Earth System Science Center at the University of Alabama in Huntsville

  24. Beneficial 26 • “If there is global warming caused by the increase of CO2 level that it would be a good thing because it would allow food, timber, and temperatures to provide a greater quality of life. Warming has been shown to positively impact human health.” Craig Idso -- Faculty researcher, Office of Climatology, Arizona State University and founder of the Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change

  25. Conclusion • Pew Research Poll Overall we can see that if you take a careful look at some of the factors you can rule out that man has had a nil effect when contributing to warming trend. One scientist stated that there has been a 0.12% increase in CO2 levels and then states,“ It’s miniscule It’s nothing.”(Dialog, T.) August H. "Augie" Auer Jr. – Retired New Zealand MetService Meteorologist, past professor of atmospheric science at the University of Wyoming
