  1. LUNAR EXPLORATION Session 1

  2. Scott Hovland, ESA Dietrich Vennemann ESA Lisa Guerra, NASA Tom Jasin, NASA Kohtaro Matsumoto, JAXA Hidemi Hase, JAXA Sylvie Espinasse, ASI Simonetta di Pippo, ASI parttime Kate Maliga, NASA Marcello Coradini, ESA Kiyoshi Higuchi, JAXA Rainer Steinmeyer, ESA Peter Ahlf, NASA Andrea Lorenzoni ASI Participants

  3. Agenda • 09:15 – 09:30 Introduction and objectives (Chairs) • Robotic Missions to the Moon(09:30 – 12:30) Moon Exploration (Espinasse, ASI) Lunar Exploration in JAXA’s Long Term Vision (Matsumoto, JAXA) An Introduction to the Robotic Lunar Exploration Program (Jasin, NASA) SMART-1 (Coradini, ESA) • Human Lunar Architecture (14:00 – 18:00) ESA Human Lunar Architecture Activities (Hovland, ESA) Lunar Strategic Roadmap Status (Guerra, NASA) ISS as spaceport for human Moon mission Lorenzoni, ASI)

  4. Robotic Missions to the Moon • Two missions are under way • SELENE to be launched in 2006 • LRO for launch in 2008 • ASI, JAXA and NASA study future missions • ASI looks at a wide range from orbiter to lander with mobility • JAXA wishes to continue the SELENE series, potentially followed with an ISRU mission • NASA is working on a lander as Mission 2 and another orbiter to complete research from orbit • ESA, through its Science Directorate, is considering and discussing participation in Chandrayan and Chang’e • An orbiter following on LRO seems to be an excellent opportunity for international co-operation • Science goals match or are complementary

  5. Human Lunar Architecture • ESA presented a vision for Lunar Exploration which was backed-up by architecture studies in the ESTEC Concurrent Design Facility • A further architecture study addressed an excursion scenario and a lunar base scenario • More studies are planned to help identify elements which Europe could contribute to an international endeavour • NASA’s presentation addressed the outcome so far of the Lunar Roadmapping activity, which is now accelerated and shall lead to an overall architecture by July • The following scenario options were elaborated Lunar Evolution Early Outpost Early Lunar ResourcesExpedited Moon-to-Mars • Need for a heavy lift launch vehicle identified from Mars requirements • More intense exchange on architecture trades desirable • All participants agreed to further discuss how this can be done in a rapidly changing environment

  6. Working Groups • The group was concerned about the many different groups discussing exploration and claiming to co-ordinate • In view of the complexity of the exploration scene there no easy way out • It was suggested to try and reduce the number of groups and to define the relations and interfaces between them by identifying clear terms
