  2. Purpose of the CDSX • to facilitate online exchanges of CDS data • to provide useful and timely peer analyses

  3. History of the CDSX • Common Data Set (CDS) Initiative since early 1990s w/ publishers, AIR, & IR community • Many IR staff encourage exchange of CDS data • Based on 1999-01 Voluntary Institutional On-Line Information Network (VIOLIN) project funded by NCES & conducted by John Milam & Tod Massa • AIR HEDPC Task Force led by Mary Sapp w/ Peggye Cohen & Tod Massa met since 2001 • Based on publishers’ 2002-03 CDS Excel file

New CDSX project • John Milam and HigherEd.org, Inc. have established and host the CDSX for data sharing among colleges and universities • Partnership with The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching • With the permission of participating institutions, selected CDSX data may be used as part of the 2005 Carnegie Classification

  5. Current CDSX objectives • Collect, edit, & share 2003-04 CDS data • Provide an outline tool for downloading CDS data • Compile early-release data on Academic Year 2004-05 tuition data and fees, which are part of the 2003-04 CDS but may not be available until now

  7. Status report • 303 registered users as of 5/25/04 • All types of schools (2 year, AAU, SUG, HEDS, other privates) • ½ of schools w/ published data • Only handful chose not to share w/ Carnegie • Produced special 2003-04 tuition & fees report

Expansion – Plus Tools • Provide Premium Membership for low fee ($50) • Create HTML version of CDS to share • Generate Word/PDF version of CDS to share • Download a single CSV file for each part of the CDSX that is shared Future Plans: • Provide trend analyses • Incorporate IPEDS data • Provide value-added analytical reports • Add special collections of interest to peer groups
