  2. American colonists had many problems with George III. They wanted the right to vote and didn’t believe they should be taxed if they weren’t represented in Parliament. They felt they should have the freedom of speech even if it criticized the king. The subjects of the British colonies believed they had rights that couldn’t be taken away. The subjects wanted to remain British subjects but believed King George III should rule using Enlightenment principles. • 1. What term describes the right to vote? • 2. This changed the existing line of succession by displacing his daughter Mary, a Protestant and the wife of William of Orange, with young James as heir. The establishment of a Roman Catholic dynasty in the kingdom now seemed likely. Some of the most influential leaders of the Tories united with members of the opposition Whigs and set out to resolve the crisis by inviting William of Orange and his wife Mary to England to rule.
