  1. Singing the Song of the Lord GateWay Church January 2009 Barbara Todd

  2. A place for the King “The living God dwells where His people worship, and life happens where He dwells. It is my conviction therefore, that the life-flow of a congregation will only rise as high as their worship of the Godhead…… His power and glory are released through worship, capacitating us for the establishing of His kingdom on Earth ” Jack Hayford - “Manifest Presence”

  3. Worship is not just about singing. • It is about giving God His due and acknowledging who He is. It is about presenting ourselves as “living sacrifices” to Him. • It results in ….. • the formation of hearts in His presence; • the shaping of disciples who know Him through being with Him; • the transforming and directing of the Holy Spirit; • preparation for the battle and • the opening up of a doorway to His power, allowing God to work in the world.

He will take great delight in you. He will quiet you with his love. He will rejoice over you with singing." • shir - most commonly used word for “the song of the Lord” eg • Ps 42:8 “By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life”. Num 21: 17 “Then Israel sang this song:Spring up, O well! Sing about it” • ron - song of deliverance/not quiet - a song of triumph and freedom eg Ps 32:7 “You are my hiding place;you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance”.

  11. Words for sing/singing/song in the Old Testament - 2 • anah - a song of thanksgiving eg Ps 147:7 “sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; make music to our God on the harp”/Ex 15/Hosea 2: 14-15/Ezra 3: 10-11 • shir chadash - a new/recent song - with a vital prophetic dimension eg Ps 33:3 “Sing to him a new song, play skillfully, and shout for joy”, 40:3 “He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God”, 96:1, 144: 9, 149:1 • massa - something to be carried/a burden/ a prophecy eg I Chron 15:27 - when carrying the Ark - ”Kenaniah, who was in charge of the singing of the choirs”

  12. God’s people sing - in the New Testament - 1 • Acts 16:23-28 ” About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.” • Col 3:16 “teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” • Eph 5:18-19“Be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, making melody in your heart to the Lord.” • 1Cor 14:15 “I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.”

  13. Song in the New Testament - 2 • James 5: 13 “Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise.” • Rev 5:13 “Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing: "To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb, be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!"

  14. We can sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs In some ways difficult to distinguish… • Psalm - a poem set to music, often spontaneous • Hymn - a previously recorded/written song which describes and celebrates the past victories of God • Spiritual song - generally spontaneous, including singing in tongues and singing interpretations of tongues

  15. We can prophesy in song As with anything prophetic…. • it must find its foundation in scripture; • it must exhort, encourage or comfort; • its intention must be to ultimately bring blessing; • it should encourage upright living; • it must come from pure motives/be free from deceit and • it can direct and/or instruct.

  16. Our singing could be spiritual warfare • because Satan doesn’t like us to worship God as he would rather that we worshipped him; • when we are completely focused on God and away from ourselves; • when we are exalting and praising God and • when we are seeking to push back the darkness eg - when we when are seeking God’s intervention in our lives and in the world and • when we are asking God to open blind eyes and set captives free etc.

  17. We can sing to wells “Then Israel sang this song, spring up oh well; sing ye into it. The princes dug the well” Num 21:16-18 They sang to the well because • the lawgiver, probably Moses, directed them to; • it was custom, representing a spiritual principle, to sing a song designed to release the waters in a new well or to unblock the flow of an old one and • there were prophetic implications - they would break through by singing. We can sing to ask God to release things/situations, to seek breakthrough and to ask for the flow of the Holy Spirit/Jesus as Living Water in our lives/church/land.

  18. What has God said to GateWay about worship? • Our name - GateWay - a place for Jesus to meet with us • We would be a church with a strong emphasis on worship and prophecy [Hugh Osgood, Edward Adegbo, Graham Geddis] - a place where God speaks • We should /focus on God and seek God’s manifest presence amongst us - a place where we seek Jesus and He is central to all we do and are • Jacob’s ladder [Hugh Osgood, John Presdee] - a place where Heaven meets Earth • Worshippers going out in front of the army - 2 Chron 20, Jehoshaphat [Graham Geddis, Faith Forster] - a place where worship is warfare • We should unblock the wells [Alison C, John G] • Singing songs of deliverance over people/situations [men in hats - Adrian] - a place where captives are set free

  19. We can sing songs of deliverance • God Himself eg Ps 32: 6-7 “You shall preserve me from trouble. You shall surround me with songs of deliverance.” Psalm 118:14 “The LORD is my strength and my song; He has become my salvation.” • God’s people did it eg Exodus 15 “Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD:"I will sing to the LORD, for He is highly exalted. The horse and its rider He has hurled into the sea.The LORD is my strength and my song; He has become my salvation”.

  20. How could we sing songs of deliverance? It’s not really clear from the Bible. But… • we should always be directed and motivated by the Holy Spirit; • we should exalt and magnify the Lord [a good place to start]; • we should seek the Lord’s intervention in, or will for, the person or situation; • we should not be ignorant of the enemy’s devices, intention to thwart God’s plans, or hit back at us and so • we should ensure that we seek the Lord’s protection/covering; • we should persist and not give up and • wait patiently for the Lord.
