  2. Survey Assumptions • Target population (theoretical domain) • Sample • random • systematic • True value =target population • Sample value is measured and computed • Infer (or estimate) population value from sample

Survey Methods • Develop questionnaire measures for each variable • Systematically (or randomly) draw sample • Survey Delivery • mail • phone • face to face • Analyze results • Often cross-tabulate • Infer relationship between variables in the population • What is the probability these results would be found if there is no relationship in the population?

  4. Threats to Validity • External Validity: • Population definition • Non-random, non-systematic sampling • Low Response Rate • Measurement Validity • Poor operational definitions/measures • Context • clean air in January • Presidential performance during election season
