  1. Using “Ethnic NewsWatch”: A Database of the AVL Lea Ann Hansert, Media Specialist Regional School

  2. Ethnic NewsWatch (ENW) is a comprehensive full text database, which has titles that reflect the diversity of the American population in a manner that is not found in the “mainstream periodicals”. It contains +700,000 articles.

  3. Composed of “the newspapers, magazines, and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press.” -African-American and Caribbean -Arab and Arab-Americans -Asian and Asian-Americans -European -Eastern European -Hispanic -Jewish -Native Peoples -Multi-Ethnic

  4. Accessing Ethnic NewsWatch • Access the Alabama Virtual Library • www.avl.lib.al.us • From the AVL Homepage, select the “Campus & Library” button.

  5. Choosing the Ethnic NewsWatch Database • Scroll down the page to 4. “Search a Specific Database”. • Find “Ethnic NewsWatch” and select it. • http://enw.softlineweb.com/searchFrame.asp

  6. The Basic Search Screen • The Basic Search screen has a “Words in Articles” field,“Subjects” field, “Publication Name” field, and an “Ethnic Group” field.**For best results, use the controlled vocabulary of the Browse Windows. **To select multiple entries from the Browse Window, click on the first selection, then hold down the Ctrl key and click on each additional selection. • Click the “Results Tally” button to see the number of results. • Click the “Submit Search” button to go to the “List Display Screen”, where you will find a listing of the retrieved records.

  7. List Display Screen • Clicking on “Submit Search” brings you to the “List Display” Screen. • This screen displays all the retrieved records from your search. • The list includes the Article Title, Author, Publication Name, Publication Date, and Preview or Synopsis of each article. • The number of articles displayed per page can be controlled by using the “Articles Per Page” box. • On this screen, you can sort articles by Relevancy, Publication Date or Publication Name. • To display an article click on its title.

  8. Article Display Screen • This screen shows you the complete article, number of words in the article, number of times your search term(s) appear, and the publication logo. • A vertical button display on the left side of the screen allows you to perform several actions within the full-text article.

  9. “Pick for Search” Feature • To add a word or phrase from an article to your search, highlight the word or phrase and click the “Pick for Search” button. • The word or phrase will automatically be added to your search.

  10. Publication Screen • This screen displays directory information, mission, and history of publication and a link to the publication’s website. • It is accessed by clicking on the logo of the publication name. The logos appear at the top of the “Article Display Screen”.

  11. Print/Export Screen • This screen may be accessed by clicking on the Print/Export button on either the “List Display Screen” or the “Article Screen”. You may choose to print the article or citation or both. To export the selected articles, you simply select “file” and “save as”.
