Our city : Brest. I- Its situation. As you can see, our city is situated at the extreme West of France. Moreover, the name of our department « the Finistere » means in Breton « the end of the earth ». BMO: Brest métropole océane.

  1. Our city : Brest

  2. I- Its situation As you can see, our city is situated at the extreme West of France. Moreover, the name of our department « the Finistere » means in Breton « the end of the earth ».

  3. BMO: Brest métropole océane This means that Brest belongs to a partnership with 7 other cities and many of the pupils of the exchange live in one of these cities, not only in Brest. The river which crosses the town is called « the Penfeld ».

  4. II-A few numbers • Brest, it is: • 140 577 inhabitants • 214 000 inhabitants in BMO • 50 km2 • The mayor is François Cuillandre

  5. The main employers • It is above all employers who have a link with the sea, the military, the Health and the studies.

  6. III- A few elements of history Brest has always been a city turned towards the sea. Here are a few examples: In 1631, the city becomes a military port with the action of Richelieu, the famous minister of Louis XIII.

  7. During the 17th century, the city is fortified under Vauban, a minister of Louis XIV. • During the 17th and the 18th centuries, Brest is also known for its privateers as Jean-Francois Riou de Kerhallet.

  8. In 1750 , a penal colony is built in Brest and it will only be closed one century later.

  9. The world Wars. • As a military port, Brest has participated a lot in the two World Wars and you will see that the city has been quite totally destroyed by the Second. So we don’t have many old monuments left!

  10. This is the only « old street » we have, it is called « the street of Saint Malo ».
