  3. Some key points • All postgraduate students in the Faculty do this module • Common core of teaching • School-specific applications of the material • A module leader or co-ordinator for each School

  4. Aim • To give students the skills required to undertake research work for projects at postgraduate diploma and MSc level • by • Lecture input on core elements • Applying the learning in the context of a piece of work specified by the School or programme, e.g. • preparation of a research proposal • individual or group project • Delivery and assessment controlled at School level

  5. Learning outcomes • Understand and apply principles of research to his/her field of study. • Understand and apply the principles of managing a research project. • Perform a literature review. • Organise and perform data collection, analysis and presentation. • Write and present a technical paper/report. • Understand the dynamics of team working and make a positive contribution to a team investigation. • Develop subject-specific skills as defined by programme

Schedule of activities • Lectures in weeks 1 to 6 • Introduction and Project Management (Angela Benzies, SoE) • Information Searching (Dorothy Millar, NULIS) • Generating a Research Idea (Julian Hine, SBE) • Organising, Processing and Presenting Data (Emma Hart, SoC) • Writing Up (Adarkwah Antwi, SBE) • Dynamics of Team Working (Angela Benzies, SoE) • School-specific work • starts between weeks 1 and 7 • finishes in week 14

  7. Assessment • Coursework only • Two items, approximately weeks 9 and 14 • Usually comprises: • research proposal • project report plus appropriate deliverables

  8. What to do now • Attend the lectures and get the associated notes • Start to apply the material from week 1 • If you have queries, ask presenter or School contact or programme leader • Apply the knowledge gained outside the module

  10. Conclusion • The lectures provide essential knowledge for the module assessments • Research Skills are needed for PgD and MSc work • The idea is that you apply the knowledge to your specific field • Some people are experts in one or more of the topics but don’t assume you know it all
