  2. Shakespeare’s Life • Born April 23, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon • His father, John, worked as a glove maker • His mother, Mary, was a farmer’s daughter • Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway when he was 18 and she was 26.

  5. Shakespeare’s Life (2) • The couple had 3 children: Susana, Judith, and Hamnet (twins). • Shakespeare went to London in the late 1580’s: • He acted in plays. • He was also recognized as a playwright.

  13. SHAKESPEARE’S WORK • Actor and playwright • He wrote 37 plays including: • Comedies • Tragedies • Histories • His plays discussed the issues of love, politics, family, and religion. • He also wrote 106 poems.

  14. Success and the End • Three of his most famous plays include: • “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” • “Romeo and Juliet” • “Richard II” • Shakespeare died on April 23, 1616 at age 52.

  19. Life in Elizabethan England • People were poor. • London was growing and prosperous. • Transportation: • Horses • Boats crossing the Thames River • Poor medical care: • People believed in potions instead of doctors. • People visited apothecaries (druggists) for help.

  20. Life in Elizabethan England (2) • Most people lost their teeth and hair by age 20. • The Bubonic Plague killed many people.
