  1. Stereotypes in the Media By: Nicole Shears Christine Schinn & John Montecalvo

  2. Teenagers

  3. Thesis • In the media, teenagers are portrayed as alcoholics, drug abusers, criminals, disobedient and promiscuous.

  4. Media Examples • Thirteen – Portrays two young teenage girls as promiscuous and drug abusers. Girls are also portrayed as alcoholics and poor students. It also shows how influential your peers can be on you in a negative way. Thirteen also shows two girls that have no regards to what their parents tell them to do.

  5. In Reality • Not all thirteen year old girls are into drugs, sex, and stealing • Not all teenagers are influenced by their peers and not all teenagers ignore their parents • And not all teenage girls are promiscuous and use their sex appeal to get what they want.

  6. BANG

  7. Media examples • Gridiron Gang – portray young males as drug abusers and criminals. It takes place in a juvenile detention center were most of the kids are gang members and participated in gun violence.

  8. In Reality • Not all teenage boys belong to gangs. • Not all teenage boys own a gun, and participate in gun violence. • Also not all teenage boys are in juvenile detention centers.

  9. Media Examples • American Pie – portrays a group of teenage boys as only caring about losing their virginity. They drink at parties, and act out for the ladies and most only care about sports and sex

  10. In Reality • Not all teenage boys and course are concerned about losing their virginity before prom night • Not all teenagers go to parties and drink • Also some teenagers care more about school than the opposite sex

  11. Scholarly Opinions • “One minute your sweet child is begging you to come on the class trip or to lie down with her while she falls asleep. Then, seemingly overnight, she starts treating you like dirt, discounting everything you say and snickering at your suggestions. If you look closely, you'll see that you've been through this before, when she was a toddler -- only instead of shouting "no!" like a two-year-old would, a teenager simply rolls her eyes in disgust.” • This opinion makes it seem that all teenagers are bad kids. That they don’t respect their elders and that they don’t care about the opinions of their parents. However that is far from true because most teenagers care how their parents feel whether they show it or not. http://www.webmd.com/parenting/features/5-teen-behavior-problems-troubleshooting-guide

  12. Scholarly Opinions • “Teens use alcohol and other drugs for many reasons. They may do it because they want to fit in with friends or certain groups. They may also take a drug or drink alcohol because they like the way it makes them feel. Or they may believe that it makes them more grown up. Teens tend to try new things and take risks, and they may take drugs or drink alcohol because it seems exciting.” • This quote states that all teenagers use drugs and alcohol to fit in. However that’s not at all true. Some teenagers use their personality to fit in and make friends their own way. And teenagers don’t just do drugs to fit in, many of them do it as an act of rebellion or just because they want to. This quote just states that teenagers need drugs when in reality they don’t. http://www.webmd.com/mental-health/alcohol-abuse/teen-alcohol-and-drug-abuse-topic-overview
