  1. THE CELL By: Ana María Cano, Tomas Pinzón and Natalia Acero

  2. cell membrane thin, flexible barrier around a cell; regulates what enters and leaves the cell

  3. cell wall It is found only plants. It makes the cells rigid. They are like the skeleton of a plant.

  4. nucleus a part of the cell containing DNA and RNA and responsible for growth and reproduction.

  5. chromosome threadlike structure within the nucleus containing the genetic information that is passed from one generation of cells to the next. A chromatid becomes in the shape of half a chromose, like it reproduces, it becomes a full chromosome.

  6. chromatid Identical chromosome copies, one of the two strands of a chromosome that become visible during meiosis or mitosis.A chromatid is a DNA in a shape of string that can't be seen in microscopes.

  7. DNA (biochemistry) a long linear polymer found in the nucleus of a cell and formed from nucleotides and shaped like a double helix

  8. ribosomes make proteins

  9. chloroplast organelle found in cells of plants and some other organisms that captures the energy from sunlight and converts it into chemical energy

  10. vacuole cell organelle that stores materials such as water, salts, proteins, and carbohydrates, a tiny cavity filled with fluid in the cytoplasm of a cell

  11. centriole structure in an animal cell that helps to organize cell division, one of two small cylindrical cell organelles composes of 9 triplet microtubules

  12. Endoplasmic reticulum The difference between rough and smooth is that the rough's surface is surrounded by ribosomes. ER is , a cell structure that forms a maze of passageways in which proteins and other materials are carried from one part of the cell to another.

  13. Golgi bodies the organelles where proteins and lipids are stored and then modified to suit the needs of the cell

  14. mitochondria the organelles in which nutrients are converted to energy

  15. lysosomes filled with enzymes used to break down food into particles that can be used

  16. cytoplasm the protoplasm of a cell excluding the nucleus, material between the cell membrane and the nucleus, holds everything together and allows everything to move around. (For us it is like the air) Jellylike.
