Workers: Health and safety All workers, whether they are permanent staff, agency or contractors, need to be aware of issues that affect their health and safety at work. Did you know that: • All workers have a right to work in places where risks to their health and safety are properly controlled. The primary responsibility for this is down to the employer. • Workers have a right to join and be represented by a trade union. • Both workers and employers have a legal responsibility to look after health and safety at work together. • Workers who contribute to health and safety at work are safer and healthier than those who do not.
Anyone heard of COSHH? COSHH - Control of Substances Hazardous to Health – Using chemicals or other hazardous substances at work can put people's health at risk. So the law requires employers to control exposure to hazardous substances to prevent ill health.
The basis of British health and safety law is the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. The Act sets out the general duties which employers have towards employees and members of the public, and employees have to themselves and to each other. The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) leaflet gives the Five steps to ‘risk assessment ‘. Besides carrying out a risk assessment, employers also need to: Make arrangements for implementing the health and safety measures identified as necessary by the risk assessment; 2. Appoint competent people (often themselves or company colleagues) to help them to implement the arrangements; 3. Set up emergency procedures; 4. Provide clear information and training to employees; 5. Work together with other employers sharing the same workplace.
