  2. Table of Context • What is Passive Solar? • Possible uses of Passive Solar? • The history of Passive Solar? • What are Advantages of Passive Solar? • What are some Disadvantages of Passive Solar? • What are some Careers Involded in Passive Solar? • The End

  3. What’s Passive Solar? • Using Sunlight for useful energy without use of active mechanical systems.

  4. Possible uses of Passive Solar? • Passive heating technology used as the direct or indirect gain for power consumption. • It is used for space heating, water heating and thermo siphon where thermo siphon is the technique that is based on the natural convection methods circulating liquids without using mechanical pumps. • It is used for the thermal mass also known as the thermal capacitance or heat capacity which is used to store the heat. • Used to slow down the in-door air temperature by using the phase change material techniques. • Passive heating systems are also used in solar cookers, solar chimneys and earth sheltering etc.

  5. The history of Passive Solar? • History of Passive Solar was used by the greeks,Romans and the Egyptians. • Ancient Egyptians built places to live that allowed stored energy from the sun during the day, and a heat release during the night. • the Greeks faced severe fuel shortages. Fortunately, an alternative source of energy was available - the sun. evidence shows that a standard house plan evolved during the fifth century so that every house, whether rural or urban, could make maximum use of the sun's warm rays during winter. • Fuel consumption in ancient Rome was even more profligate than in Classical Greece. In architecture, the Romans remedied the problem in the same fashion as did the Greeks.

  6. What are Advantages of Passive Solar? • After the initial investment has been recovered, the energy from the sun is practically FREE. • The recovery/ payback period for this investment can be very short depending on how much electricity your household uses. • Financial incentives are available form the government that will reduce your cost. • If your system produce more energy than you use, your utility company can buy it from you, building up a credit on your account! This is called net metering. • It will save you money on your electricity bill if you have one at all.

  7. The Disadvantages • The initial cost is the main disadvantage of installing a solar energy system, largely because of the high cost of the semi-conducting materials used in building one. • The cost of solar energy is also high compared to non-renewable utility-supplied electricity. As energy shortages are becoming more common, solar energy is becoming more price-competitive. • Solar panels require quite a large area for installation to achieve a good level of efficiency. • The efficiency of the system also relies on the location of the sun, although this problem can be overcome with the installation of certain components. • The production of solar energy is influenced by the presence of clouds or pollution in the air.
