  1. Benefits of Having Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

  2.  Traditionally, spine surgery was conducted through the ‘opensurgery’ way. This method involved a long incision which enabled the surgeon to observe and access the specific anatomy with ease. This process was extremely helpful as the entire anatomy was approachable for the surgeon.  But the open surgery method had drawbacks as well. Hence, with technological advancements, better methods of surgery were developed and this resulted in the emergence of minimally invasive surgical technique.  Long incision method damaged a wider area and affected more muscles resulting in more pain for the patient after the surgery. On the contrary, minimally invasive surgical technique avoids long incision and eliminates the risk of damage to muscles that surround the spine. This ensures that the patient goes through less muscle damage and there is lesser pain after the surgery.

  3. About MISS Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS), a.k.a “less invasive spine surgery”; this process of healing back pain involves use of specialized instruments that enable doctors to access the spine region using small incisions.

  4.  In the traditional process, an incision of about 5 to 6 inches long was made so that the doctor had complete access to the spine.  In this process, the muscles were moved to the side allowing the doctor to remove the damaged bone or disk.  It also helped the surgeon in placing cages, screws and other bone graft materials required to stabilize the spinal bones.

  5.  However, the retraction or pulling of muscles during the open surgery resulted in damage to soft tissue and muscle. This retraction offered the surgeon complete view of the problem area but it also affected more anatomy than what was required.  This increased chance of injuries to muscles, and patients often endured pain after the surgery which was completely different from back pain. It also stretched the recovery period and enhanced chances of more blood loss and infection.  MISS is designed to overcome these shortcomings of open surgery. Through MISS surgeons are able to observe the exact location of the spine area with less incisions and lesser muscle damage. This process reduces blood loss and results in faster recovery period.
