  2. The consultation came about… • ChildLine/NSPCC Residential 2008: young people identified 'children that die from abuse', and ‘suicide’ as issues that they’d like to work on. • The South Wales KIT Group were offered the opportunity to take part in a consultation on the subject.

  3. Consultation Aims • Opportunity for young people to discuss their views and suggestions • Communicate these views to senior managers and trustees

  4. Safeguarding • Invitation letter and options • Opportunity to ask questions • Clear ground rules • Knowledgeable staff present • Support sign-posted • Time-out room • Wind-down activities built in to session

Ground Rules • Listen to whoever is speaking. • Participate, share your opinions, and ask any questions. • Respect other people and their opinions. • It’s okay to disagree, but with the point not the person. • This includes being very respectful with the language we use. • This is very important: we will all have had different experiences. We might know someone who had died this way, tried it ourselves, or be worried by stories on the news. • We are unlikely to find out how closely some people have experienced it, so we must be considerate. • Make sure that you don’t put-down or attack someone who says something that sounds silly to you. • If something upsets you, it’s okay to take a time-out. Use the Time-Out space, get a drink, and take your time relaxing. • Keep it private, but remember that if you say something that makes staff worry about you or someone you know, we may have to pass that on. • Get support if you need it: staff, ChildLine, home, friends.

  6. Methodology • 3 Sessions: a) Information and awareness b) Consultation on ideas c) Creative ideas • Each session planned in advance with warm up, working and wind-down activities.

  11. Feedback from YP What messages would you give to adults about young people thinking about suicide? THOUGHTS: • Tell them ‘Don’t do it • Tell them to talk to someone about it • Don’t pressure them into talking to someone • Suggest people they can talk to • Don’t patronise them • If you say you’ll help them, help them • Make them aware that there is more to life • Make them think of happy thoughts • Listen to them • Don’t be abrupt • Tell them that everything they say is confidential (if can be) • Tell them your always there for them • Be patient • Don’t talk down to them • Help them to build up their self-confidence • Tell them about supporting charities

THOUGHTS: • Reduce stress • Make sure they can’t commit suicide • Keep them calm • Help them • Talk about the problem so a solution is gained • Talk about something else • Distract them of the suicide thoughts • Things to look forward to • Get money to fund groups • Tell them how much everyone will miss them • Physically stop them • Take them to see someone (e.g. physiatrist)

Feedback from YP What role should NSPCC and ChildLine play in preventing suicide? • THOUGHTS: • 24/7 call lines • Parent classes on dealing with suicidal children • Go to schools • Make leaflets • Talk about peer mentoring • Help before the problems get too hyped up • Place suicidal YP can go to talk to people about it • Provide information • Set up a information booklet • Information kits • Make posters, videos, guide books

Feedback from YP Is there anything else you want to say? • HOW ABOUT: • Information on adverts (internet and magazines) • Need to get the message out by going to youth clubs • Bill boards, blimps, plane with banner, festival banners, sports, helium balloons, cinema adds, adds in shops, t-shirts, men with megaphones, building posters, radio adds, advertisement cars, tent, projections on buildings.
