  1. Opportunities for Integrated Data In The National Map “Ele-Hydro” Jeff Simley U.S. Geological Survey

  2. The Goal is Integrated Elevation and Hydrography

  3. Ten meter NED and 24K NHD Integrate Very Well One mile

  4. Integration error is in the 40 foot range - on the low end in high frequency terrain 40 feet

  5. In flat terrain the error tends to be larger

  6. Not as easy to discern the river location

  7. The cost to make improvements to integration Quality with carto-derived NED and NHD follows A fixed curve – improvements cost money. Cost to Integrate Degree of Integration

  8. LiDAR and IFSAR create an entirely new paradigm because elevation and hydrography can be extracted in a coupled operation and with much more precise base data. LiDAR / IFSAR Cost to Integrate Degree of Integration

  9. Temporal accuracy is yet another issue as is integration with contemporary imagery

  10. How do we get hydrography from elevation data? Flow Direction Grids Flow Accumulation Grids

  11. This is highly developed technology and with high precision elevation data can be remarkably accurate

  12. It doesn’t necessarily produce significantly different resultsfrom the NHD, but more precise and accurate. Iowa

  13. Another Example North Carolina

  14. LiDAR-derived Hydrography works very well with this…

  15. …but not so well with this…

  16. No technology is going to make this easy

  17. There is also widespread concern about elevation- derived hydrography in metropolitan areas

  18. Elevation data will need to be informed by the existing NHD and photointerpretation to produce hydrography Photo- interpretation LiDAR Elevation Hydrography Process Process Legacy NHD Legacy WBD

  19. The resulting NHD/WBD hydrography has much more potential

  20. In the process of generating elevation-derived hydro it is possible to generate stream catchments

  21. This can enhance The National Map’s capabilities To be ready-to-use in science apps such as SPARROW

  22. …or used to more easily build NHDPlus

  23. Many types of water information can be fully integrated with the data Dams Dams Dams Dams Dams Dams Dams Photo- interpretation LiDAR Elevation Hydrography Process Legacy NHD Legacy WBD Streamgages Streamgages Streamgages Streamgages Streamgages Streamgages Streamgages

  24. The National Map is already building this intelligence Examples: streamgages, dams, water quality, diversions

  25. The river gains intelligence about streamflow

  26. Connecting the streamgage to the network Blue River Artificial Path (Blue River) Streamgage Downstream Dam Green Mountain Reservoir Upstream

  27. It makes user systems such as California’s water rights database more powerful by using TNM

  28. It is possible to build intelligent networks to make The data ready-to-use in scientific analysis McKay Stream Level 1 2 1 1 2 1 1 2 1 2 2 1 1 3 2 2 3 1 Strahler Stream Order

  29. This makes highly advanced geospatial analysis systems like StreamStats more powerful

  30. Doing this builds integrated intelligence into The National Map – creating information from data and creating a product of more direct applicability to scientific analysis. Integrated elevation – hydrography – derivatives – related data Product Web Services

  31. This then allows users to build advanced systems to better generate knowledge from TNM information

  32. Processing data into knowledge Data Information Knowledge Processing Engine Transformation NLCD Permeable Surface PRISM Area Weighted Precip Discharge At Ungaged Site StreamStats DEM Drainage Area NHD Hydro Condition Surface
