  12. Romans 13:1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.

  13. Romans 13:4 For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.

  14. Romans 13:6-7 For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God’s ministers attending continually to this very thing.

  15. Romans 13:6-7 Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.

  19. Romans 13:10 Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

  23. Acts 4:18-20 So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus.

  24. Acts 4:18-20 But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge.

  25. Acts 4:18-20 For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.

  26. Be Light of the world..as citizens (v13-17) Be Light by Submission • Fact: God ordains human government • Fact: We are Free…citizens of heaven • Willingly submit for God’s sake • So that people get saved • Not legalism…but love that motivates • What about ungodly leaders? • What if commanded to disobey God?

  28. The Manhattan Declaration The release of The Manhattan Declaration (an ecumenical document addressing the issues of life, marriage, and religious liberty) has already generated significant discussion. Since I have been on the receiving end of many questions concerning it, I thought it best to address it directly. Alistair BeggPastor, writer (1952 - )

  29. The declaration reads in part as follows: “We are Christians who have joined together across historical lines of ecclesial differences… …to speak and act in defense of these truths.” I was present at the meetings in Manhattan in October when the draft of this document was presented. Alistair BeggPastor, writer (1952 - )

  30. I listened carefully and was stirred by the ensuing discussions. I share the concerns expressed in the document. I also have respect for those who wrote the paper and also for many who have subsequently signed it. Alistair BeggPastor, writer (1952 - )

  31. Why then have I chosen not to append my name as one of the initial signers? Because of my convictions about the nature of the Gospel, and the importance of Christian co-belligerency being grounded in it. Alistair BeggPastor, writer (1952 - )

  32. This is what I wrote to Chuck Colson: “Thank you for sending me the amended document. I care deeply about these issues, but I cannot in conscience sign on with those with whom I have fundamental disagreements on the nature of the Gospel. Alistair BeggPastor, writer (1952 - )

  33. Are we wise to lay aside crucial historical differences of eternal significance so as to secure temporal advantages? George Smeaton...observes, “To convert one sinner from his way is an event of greater importance than the deliverance of a whole kingdom from temporal evil.” Alistair BeggPastor, writer (1952 - )

  34. I do not believe it is possible to embrace the premises of ecumenical strategy and still draw the conclusions of evangelical orthodoxy. The necessary co-belligerence, as far as I’m concerned, can never be rooted in a Gospel other than that which has been given to us. Alistair BeggPastor, writer (1952 - )
