  2. Pericles became the leader of Athens in 460BC Pericles’s goals Pericles had three goals for Athens Goal 1. To strengthen democracy Goal 2. Expand the empire Goal 3. beautify Athens TSW 7 summarize how Pericles advanced the life of Athenians

Pericles goal for democracy was to change the balance of power between the rich and poor In 430BC Pericles gave a speech stating that everyone was equal before the law democracy To make power equal Pericles changed the rule for holding public office Most public officials were not paid This led to only rich people being a public official TSW 7 summarize how Pericles advanced the life of Athenians

Pericles increased the number of public officials who were paid democracy By doing this poor people could also hold public office In order to hold public office you had to be a citizen which meant a free male, over 18 and a son of Athenian born parents Since Athens was using a direct democracy these reforms made power even amongst social classes TSW 7 summarize how Pericles advanced the life of Athenians

Greek wealth depended on overseas trade After wars city-states formed the Delian League for protection Empire Expansion Pericles used money from the Delian League to build a strong Athenian navy Since Athens had a strong navy it took over the leadership of the Delian League In 454BC the DelianLeague’s treasury was moved to Athens TSW 7 summarize how Pericles advanced the life of Athenians

Athens was in ruins after the Persian War Greek city-state in the Delian League paid tribute for protection Beautifying Athens Instead Pericles took this money and used it to beautify Athens without permission from the other city-states The other city states were not happy with Pericles Pericles used the money to purchase marble, gold and ivory to construct the buildings and sculptures He also used the money to pay the artists, architects and sculptors TSW 7 summarize how Pericles advanced the life of Athenians

One of the areas rebuilt was the Acropolis During this time the Parthenon was also built Beautifying Athens The Parthenon was built to have a statue of Athenia, the protector of Athens The Erechtheum is considered the most beautiful example of Greek architecture It is said that this is the place where Poseidon and Athena fought over Athens TSW 7 summarize how Pericles advanced the life of Athenians
