  1. Historical Narratives: • Accounts of real-life historical experiences • Written either by: • A person who experienced those events • A person who studied or observed the events • Two categories: • Primary • Secondary

  2. Primary Source: • Materials written by people who were participants in or observers of the events written about • Examples: letters, diaries, journals, speeches, autobiographies, interviews

  3. Primary Source: Reading Strategies • Determine the document’s origin • Try to understand the perspective and motives of the writer • (Where was he/she coming from? What was he/she trying to accomplish?) • Note sensory details about people, places, and events • Identify customs, values, conditions of culture or time period • (Remember the creation myths)

  4. Secondary Source: • Record of events written by people who were not directly involved. • Examples: biographies, histories

  5. Slave Narratives: • The life stories of people who survived slavery • Portrays the culture shock of a newly captured African • Focuses criticism on slave traders, not slave owners • Includes religious and moral appeals against slavery

  6. Descriptive Details used in Slave Narratives: • Sensory details: appeal to the five senses • Descriptions of personal reactions • Anecdotes: brief stories that support points (examples)
