  2. Synod 2008 Welcome to new members Welcome to those who have been to Synod before. Welcome to Mr. Wayne Brighton and thank you.

  3. Thank you • Those involved with the preparation. • The Cathedral Parish for their hospitality. • James Cook University and St. Mark’s College.

  4. From the Procedures booklet • One of the purposes of Synod is to receive the charge of the President, who is responsible for reporting on the state of the Diocese and delivering a charge on what he considers to be the most important issue before the Diocese at the time.

  5. Important Issues: • Ministry and Mission within the Diocese – “A Future with Hope”. • Strategies to reach our communities with the faith of Jesus Christ. • Continuing to address the hurt among the people of the Diocese.

  6. Issues - continued • Our financial situation: correct reporting • Stewardship - Studies • Saint James Village • The Good Shepherd Home

  7. A Future with Hope • A vital ministry strategy • Adapt to your local situation

  8. Five Key Areas • Proclaim the Gospel • Nurture believers • Care for those in need • Protect creation • Transform unjust structures in society

  9. Clergy Ministry is changing Three avenues for growth: • Academic input – commentary etc. • Spiritual disciplines and growth as Christian • Ongoing Formation – in your order – deacon/priest

  10. Local Ministry Teams (LMT) • Encourage for all parishes and centres. • Regulations – Government – Church – Faithfulness in Service. • Annual ministry focus • 2009 – Funerals will be the focus.

  11. LMT • Priest – bridge builder (maybe a deacon or deacons – serve the community and brings the needs of the community to the Church.) • Prayer • Liturgical Assistants & Sacristans • Pastoral Care & Visiting

  12. LMT cont’d • Music • Christian Education • Youth and Children – team/worker. • Administration • Outreach

  13. TIM • For a Ministry Team to function effectively it requires TIM. • Task – know overall task and individual tasks • Individual Needs • Maintenance - maintenance of our task(s); maintenance of our relationships and including in this area is the continued development of our skills.

  14. a thought • Larger centres – ministry teams that cross parish boundaries • Clergy and laity skills used more effectively • Ministries - dynamics of numbers e.g. youth greater possibilities

  15. Locums • Historically the practice has been to hold the fort and parishes save money. • Must be much more proactive. • In the future when there is a vacancy, I am seeking to employ intentional locums to help parishes know where they are going. • A new priest can then move forward.

  16. A Future With Hope • Blessed with talented people and an abundance of human resources. • May not have much money – but should that stop us? • Under God there are untold possibilities.

  17. God gives us a Future God gives us a future, daring us to gointo dreams and dangerson a path unknown. We will face tomorrowin the Spirit's power,we will let God change us,for new life starts now.

  18. We must leave behind ussins of yesterday, for God's new beginningis a better way.Fear and doubt and habitmust not hold us back:God gives hope, and insight, and the strength we lack.

  19. Holy Spirit, teach ushow to read the signs, how to meet the challengeof our troubled times.Love us into action, stir us into prayer, till we choose God's life, and find our future there.
