  3. From here to there • The University of Toronto Library presently provides access to over 7,500 electronic journals and over 350 indexes and abstracts. How did we get here? Where are we going?

  4. As of September 26, 1998 • Journal Indexes & Abstracts347 + 16 = 363 • Journals5,909 + 1,877 = 7,786 • Reference Sources106 + 32 = 138 • Books 81 + 7 = 88

  5. OARL • Summer of 1996 • Academic Press (IDEAL) • 6 universities in Ontario • 175 titles

  6. Toronto Library Consortium • started in 1996 by the Toronto School Board to save money on Ebsco • Grew into looking at other vendors; • IAC • Micromedia • SIRS • UMI

  7. TLC Expands • Amalgamation and interest brings in Scarborough, North York, Etobicoke, East York and York • Separate school boards • Community colleges • Other universities

  8. OLA:Ontario Library Association • Task Force on Database Licensing • Electronic Products Day: June 8th 1998 • Vendors invited: • Grolier • Encyclopedia Britannica • Ebsco • IHS/Micromedia • IAC • Electric Library

  9. COOL: Consortium Of Ontario Libraries • 4 sectors • Universities • Community Colleges • Public Libraries • School Boards ( including separate schools and independent schools )

  10. OCUL • OUDL meets in February 1998 • evolves into OCULIR • endorses the same three products

  11. Reality Check • Wednesday September 23, 1998 • COOL signs a deal with Britannica Online • over 400,000 weighted users • move on to CPI-Q and Ebsco

  12. OCULIR • ABI/Inform • Web of Science • Elsevier • MathSciNet • ERL databases • etc.

  13. What This Means • Classic win/win • More content • Cheaper prices • Bargaining position vis a vis vendors

  14. Expanding Partnerships • UNB has joined with UofT for Elsevier • UNB has joined OARL for IDEAL • Queen’s has joined OARL for IDEAL
