  4. Renaissance -Rebirth (of what?) -GREAT Interest in education, art, science - Growth of cities, decline of feudalism To some it represented a new age of Greece & Roman culture Started in Northern Italy & spread throughout Europe.

  5. The Renassiance Humanism… - a time of questioning -scholars less concerned about mysteries of heaven -more interested in the world and human events -life not controlled by heavenly outside forces but my human events & choices

  6. Humanists Scholars called themselves Humanists -right of people to learn and think for themselves

  7. Renaissance Artists -Appreciated the beauty of humans and nature -Paintings, sculpture, music, writing -Used to be mostly religious images but now people, nature and images from myths & legends -more interested in human qualities than religious qualities of subjects WHO?????

  12. Protestant Reformation p138-139 Remember…Renaissance time of questioning Many began to question church & it’s leaders Protestant Reformation??? Was church more interested in wealth than it’s religion? Questionable practices…

  13. Indulgences -sold to believers -Freed their owners of punishment for the sins they had committed Many “protested” church corrupt practices who became known as……..Protestants The movement to reform/change Catholic Church became known as Protestant Reformation

  14. Martin Luther -German monk & scholar -Very outspoken against church corruption -Wrote essay/thesis calling out the church and it’s corruption -Nailed it to the front door of the church -Pope banished him from Catholic Church -So what did Luther do??????

  15. Luther organized a new church -used German, not Latin, as language -grew into large following Other Protestants John Calvin -Followers in France called Hugenots - “ “ England “ Puritans

  16. Age of Exploration Portuguese led the way for exploration -Sail south down the west coast of Africa -Why??? -Gold, Salt, spices -Land route to Asia to costly 1488 Bartholomeu Dias reached the Cape of Good Hope (Southern tip of Africa)

  19. Age of Revolution Revolution -a great change, many times violent change Rule of the People -18th century ended with great changes in Europe and Am. Colonies -Divine Right of Kings -kings ruled by the will of God, Chosen by God, a form of a god Fading away

  20. Age of Revolution People wanted a greater role in Gov’t Philosophers & writers -John Locke & Jean Jacque Rousseau -believed gov’t should serve & protect citizens -citizens should take more responsibility in gov’t & for themselves & their actions -Montesquieu…also foundations of Am. Gov’t

Age of Revolution British Democracy -Developed shared power between king and parliament but over time, king forced to adopt constitution that gave power to Parliament -Commons / Lords Democracy in the Americas -With Declaration of Independence, constitution & representative congress, US became model for many other revolutions.

Age of Revolution French Revolution -1789, opposed by King Louis XVI & Queen Marie Antoinette, tried to aid nobles and were executed. -1799 Napoleon Bonaparte ( hero from earlier revolution) became dictator of France. Declared himself emperor in 1804. Europe reacted against him and went to war against France . Defeated in 1815.

  23. Age of Revolution • French Revolution inspired others to revolt in Latin America, Greece, Belgium, Italy and Germany.
