DEMOGRAPHICS & ECONOMY • Substantial local economy (2,500 businesses) • 16,000 employees • 20% living in Unley • 33% residents work in CBD • Accessibility – travel to work • Lower car use – 57.7% vs 63.3% ASD • Higher public transport use – 9.5% vs 8.3% ASD • High proportion of cycling – 3.4% vs 1.3% ASD • High proportion of walking – 5.2% vs 2.6% ASD

UNLEY’S AGE FRIENDLY JOURNEY - WHY? • We are all ageing! • Increased life expectancy for men (79.3) and women (83.9). • SA: By 2031 the number of people aged 65+ will double. • Our population is changing: there will be more older people & fewer younger people • 19.5% of Unley’s population is aged 50-64 years. • 16.4% are over 65 years (expected to increase to 23%) • 4.0% are over 85 years (compared to State – 2.4%). • 23% born in non-english speaking country. 2011 Census

What sort of place would our residents like to grow old in? • A Place where: • I can engage and participate fully in everything that is going on in the community • I can easily get to where I want to go, when I want to go • I can access good quality healthcare and services without difficulty • I can have a say in what happens in my city if I wish to • I feel safe and secure • I can live a healthy and active life • Young and old interact and get along

City of Unley Ageing Strategy • Comprises five discreet domains: • Services – to assist older people to remain independent and ‘age in place’ • Access and Mobility – infrastructure and programs • Housing - diversity • Community Engagement and Participation – eg volunteering, communication tools • Wellbeing – eg recreational opportunities

LANEWAY HOUSING • Laneway: • Historically used to service the outhouse • Secondary access to property • Opportunity for strategic densification by developing secondary dwellings • In home formal and informal care $11,370 per person per year • Residential aged care - $48,710 per person per year

  21. PROJECTS WITH TACSI • CARE REFLECT • Caring is not just a transaction eg cleaning • Caring is about building relationships, exchanging experiences and learning new things • Create time and space for care workers to practice caring that enables good living

PROJECTS WITH TACSI WEAVERS • Carers usually have enormous stress • Existing services do little to reduce stress for carers • Weavers are people with lived caring experience who are trained and supported to help people new to the caring role activate their friends and family, navigate systems and learn new strategies.
