  23. The Abiding Life of John 15:1-16Secrets for Branches Teammates May 26, 2019 Lee Bennett

  24. Dr. Norman B. Harrison quote: • “Abiding is the key to Christian experience by which the divine attributes are transplanted into human soil, to the transforming of character and conduct.”

  25. Frustrations & Struggles • Have you ever heard vines or other fruit bearers groaning, writhing, or sweating to produce fruit? • Have you ever wondered why some Christians are not happy or contented? Why are there times when the Lord seems so far away?

  26. Secrets of the branches • Are we the vine or the branches? What is our role? What is the role of Jesus? • Who is the gardener? What does He do? For what purpose? What is our role in this? Why would someone plant vines anyway?

  27. Jesus teaches lessons from the vine • John 15:1-3I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.

  28. Abiding, bearing, or burning 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. 5 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch, and dries up, and they gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

  29. Table Talk • What is the relationship between Christ and you, as illustrated in these verse? • Why does God prune every branch that bears fruit? What are some experiences you can identify as pruning in your life as a Christian? What were the results?

  30. Jesus teaches about prayer & fruit • 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. 9 Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love.

  31. Jesus teaches obedience, love & joy • 10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments, and abide in His love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full. This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.

  32. Jesus contrasts love, slavery & friendship • 13 Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are My friends, if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing, but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from the Father I have made known to you.

  33. Jesus gives them a new commission • 16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name, He may give to you.

  34. How do these things show you are abiding? • Answered prayers? Spending more time with Him? • Changing attitudes and lives? More joy? • Greater intimacy with God revealed by concern for the lost and needy?

  35. Summary of Abiding in Christ • “To abide in Christ is, on the one hand, to have no known sin unjudged and unconfessed, no interest into which He is not brought, no life which He cannot share. On the other hand, the abiding one takes all burdens to Him, and draws all wisdom, life and strength from Him.” Cyrus Ingersoll Scofield, author of the annotated Scofield Bible

  36. Closing • Table prayers • Carrie Underwood: “Jesus, take the wheel!” • https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=Carrie+Underwood+Jesus+Take+the+Wheel+Lyrics&&view=detail&mid=D00BF6D8FAFD592FDCE7D00BF6D8FAFD592FDCE7&&FORM=VRDGAR
