  2. Red Letter Outline • What does the name “Ishmael” mean? Where does it come from? (summarize the TWO stories) • What do “Abram” and “Abraham” mean? How does he get his name? • What does “Isaac” mean? How does he get that name? (TWO stories) How is the meaning of “isaac” transformed at the end?

  3. Prayer of the WeekPsalm 63:2-9 • O God, you are my God-- for you I long! For you my soul is thirsting, My body pines for you, like a dry, weary land without water. So I look to you in the sanctuary to see your strength and your glory. • For your love is better than life; my lips will speak your praise. So I will bless you as long as I live; I will lift up my hands, calling on your name. • My soul shall be filled as with a banquet, my mouth shall praise you with joy. On my bed I remember you; on you I muse through the night watches. • For you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I rejoice. My soul clings to you; your right hand holds me fast.

  4. GENESIS 16 & 21 What does the name “Ishmael” mean? Where does it come from? (summarize the TWO stories) • Ishmael means “God hears” and is found in two stories: STORY 1: • Sarai despairs of having a child and so provides Abram with her servant Hagar as “surrogate” • Sarai feels insulted by Hagar and the relationship of Abram and the (unborn) son and punishes her so harshly that Hagar flees. • Hagar cries to God, but “God hears” her plea and directs her back to Abraham and Sarah. STORY 2: • Later, Hagar is expelled by Abraham and Sarah, after the birth of Isaac • Hagar despairs and abandons her son, but God hears his cries and saves them, blessing Ishmael with many descendants • Thus in two ways “God hears” their plea – first Hagar’s and then Ishmael’s

  6. Genesis 16 & 17 What do “Abram” and “Abraham” mean? How does he get his name? • “Abram” means “exalted father” but “Abraham” means “father of a multitude” • After Ishmael, who will become father of many, Abraham will also become father to the child of the covenant (Isaac), who will also become father of many. (12 nations each) • This will fulfill God’s promise of many descendants, a “multitude of nations” • God gives him this name, in view of the promise.

  7. Genesis 17, 18, 21 What does “Isaac” mean? How does he get that name? (TWO stories) How is the meaning of “isaac” transformed at the end? “Isaac” means “he laughs” and there are two stories about it • Isaac gets this name • (1) because Abraham laughs at the thought he can have another child; AND • (2) because Sarah also laughs, first in sarcastic disbelief BUT later for joy – God transforms them and their cynical laughter into true joy, shared by others. Basic Message? This shows a recurrent theme in OT: • God can bring good from evil: their laugh of cynicism at what they think impossible becomes a laugh of true joy at what God makes possible
