  2. CHALLENGE One of Gumutindo’s objectives is to conserve the environment; this has been achieved partly through organic coffee production and tree planting. However the challenge is; farmers are still cutting down trees for energy (firewood and charcoal). This has led to landslides, prolonged rain and drought seasons, pests and diseases etc. Most if not all farmers along mount Elgon at least have a cow that provides cow dung but they have no idea about what else one can get out of this cow dung apart from manure. Therefore the intention of this idea is to introduce biogas production in these farmers households with an enhanced utility

  3. ULTIMATE GOAL • To conserve the environment by reducing on tree cutting through use of biogas energy

  4. Specific Objectives • To increase the vegetation cover through encouraging tree planting • To reduce on tree cutting for charcoal and firewood through use of biogas as an alternative source of energy in the households • To generate electricity for other purposes like ironing, refrigeration and TV/Radio from biogas. • To make use of cow dung in a diversified manner that’s; using cow dung for both energy and soil fertility • To increase coffee production through increased soil fertility by having a favorable climate for crop production

Relevance for my job • Gumutindo is a Local word meaning “High Quality” and Our philosophy as Gumutindo therefore is production of high quality washed Arabica coffee in an environmentally friendly manner. This cannot be achieved if environmental conservation is not taken into account. It is therefore important to provide an alternative to charcoal and firewood that does not lead to cutting down the trees which is the introduction of biogas production among our farmers

  6. Activities • Cary out sensitization workshops with farmers • Provide knowledge and skills through trainings and recruitment of technical staff • Introduction of dairy cows to those families without cows • Carrying out pilot projects in selected areas

  7. Time frame • This project is expected to start next year for a period of three years. In the first year, there will be a lot of sensitization, trainings and research. In the second year, we shall carryout a pilot project to test its sustainability. Then in the third year, we shall embark on the whole project.

  8. Resources • There will be fundraising through coffee discounts at every primary society • Gumutindo will collaborate with other partners like Twin Trading UK to source for funds from customers and well wishers

  9. Questions and other issues to be investigated • Availability of space for biogas plants • Having centralized places • Availability of equipment for generating electricity • Research to find out the most suitable equipment • Availability of financial resources to start up the project • Fundraising and also lobbying from well wishers and customers
