JAPAN 2010 33rd APEC Transportation Working Group, Tokyo, Japan, October 10-14 2010 13 Mar. 2010 Japan hosted the Asia-Pacific Ministerial Conference on Aviation Security in Tokyo From the Joint Declaration “Utilize modern technologies to detect prohibited materials and to prevent the carriage of such materials on board aircraft while respecting the privacy and safety of individuals.” the Japanese government decided to carry out a trial of Advanced Imaging Technology (hereinafter “AIT”) to examine the future possibility of introducing AIT into airports in Japan 2

JAPAN 2010 33rd APEC Transportation Working Group, Tokyo, Japan, October 10-14 2010 Privacy protection • ・Only screeners can enter the monitor room. • ・The machine displays full-body images that blur faces; • ・A screener is the same gender as the person • ・The screeners may never see screened passengers. • ・Any device for taking pictures cannot be brought into the monitor room. • ・The machine does not store any images that it displays. •  ・The images are deleted as soon as the screening is completed. For the AIT which displays clear full-body images ・Only screeners and the passenger himself/herself can check the scanned image. For other types of AIT which do not display clear full-body images 6
