Course matters Information & Assessment • Course Information Point – CIP • One on each campus/gateway – dedicated CIP counter, CIP email (CIP followed by the campus e.g. CIPCarlisle) and CIP phone lines plus sickness absence lines. • Source of academic/course information & forms. • Confirmation of student status including bank letters, stamping student railcard applications • The place to hand in & collect assignments • Further information about the Course Information Point can be found on the web site under your studies • Assessment Office – contact though phone, email or via your local CIP • Deal with your final assessment, grades, qualifications, transcripts, appeals, malpractice, extenuating circumstances & certificates

Course matters – Results • The ICON Student Portal • The ICON Student Portal is available 24/7 from the Current Students page of the • University Website or via blackboard through the toolbox. • The ICON Student Portal enables you to view/update: • The details of the course(s) you are currently studying. • The finalised results of the modules you have completed. • Any reassessment details you may have. • Your contact details and next of kin details. • The University will use the ICON Student Portal as the main means of communicating your results and reassessment. • PLEASE NOTE: Your finalised results will not appear on the ICON Student Portal until after the University Assessment Board has met and you have received an email confirming they are available.

Financial matters • Student finance payments • Students are offered the following options to pay Tuition and accommodation fees: • TuitionFee Loan – The SLC pays tuition fee loans directly to the University • Accommodation & Tuition - Payment in full no later than 15th Oct 2012 • Accommodation & Tuition - Three installments due on the following dates (1st)15th Oct 2012, (2nd)25th Jan 2013, (3rd)19th Apr 2013 For Further Advice on Tuition and Accommodation Payments Please Contact Finance on 01524 590826 or Email AccountsReceivableTeam@cumbria.ac.uk

  12. Mental Health and Wellbeing • Counselling can give you time to explore what is going on in your life in a safe setting. Social media • Most of you will be active users of social media: • Facebook, Twitter, Google +, blogging, etc… • The university supports the use of social media in particular for academic and collaborative uses. • However, it is your responsibility to read and act in accordance with the principles of the University’s Social Media Policy. • Consider the consequences of inappropriate communications: • Breach of the Student Code of Conduct - impact on course progression • Breach of the Code of Conduct of professional bodies such as the NMC and Teaching Agency – impact on future career • Employers who consider candidates’ electronic footprints within the selection process – impact on employability • Don’t delay! Check out the policy and seek advice from the Students Union if necessary.

IT matters – are you connected? • Have you activated your Network username • and password? • Log on to any university PC (not a Mac) using the following: • Username: newstudent • Password: Welcome1 • Use your student number found on your Cumbria card and follow the instructions – make sure you keep your temporary password safe. • Logon using your temporary password and change it to something of your choice. It must still be secure. • KEEP IT SAFE – Don’t tell anyone your password!

Library and study resources • You will have access to: • A comprehensive range of print and electronic books • QUEST – the University’s equivalent to Google, where you can search for and find top quality academic books, journals and more • Subject specific webpages that will recommend the most up to date and relevant library resources for your subject • Wireless computing facilities • Laptops and other media equipment that you can loan

Preparing for your first assignment • Support is available for the following areas: • Academic skills • Digital skills • Library and Information Literacy skills. • This support is available via: • Online self guided materials from the Skills@Cumbria webpages • Group workshop sessions requested by yourselves or by your tutor • Individual appointments – face to face, email, telephone. • The most important thing to remember is to organise your time well and be proactive by seeking guidance early.

  23. Academic expectations • The Student Code of Conduct outlines the expectations regarding the behaviour of all students at the University of Cumbria. You can view the Student Code of Conduct & Adjudication Procedure booklet on the university website. • Make sure that you read your course handbook carefully. In it, you should find all the information you need on how to present your written work and, in particular, the referencing style you should use. • The University regards any form of academic malpractice as a serious matter. • Five main types of malpractice are defined within the University’s regulations, these are: • ■ Cheating in examinations • ■ Plagiarism • ■ Collusion in coursework • ■ Fabrication and falsification • ■ Impersonation.
