  2. MCAN’s Mission To increasecollege readiness, participation and completion in Michigan, particularly among low-income students, first-generation college students, and students of color.

  3. MCAN’s Vision and Values • College is Postsecondary Education: MCAN uses the term “college” to refer to the attainment of valuable postsecondary credentials beyond high school, including professional/technical certificates and academic degrees. • College is a Necessity: Postsecondary education is a prerequisite to success in a knowledge-based economy. Everyone must pursue and complete a postsecondary credential or degree beyond high school. • College is for Everyone: The postsecondary education attainment rates among low-income students and students of color are significantly lower than those of other students. MCAN is committed to closing these gaps. • College is a Public Good: Postsecondary educational opportunity and attainment are critical to a just and equitable society, strong economy, and healthy communities.

  18. MEDIA MESSAGES TO INSPIRE • PSAs urge young students to find someone who can help them get to college and directs students and their mentors to a website and other resources • Third series of PSAs illustrate how the • vision it takes to paint and conceive a mural, • the determination it takes to reach level 70 of a video game, and • the hard work it takes to land a challenging skateboard trick can be used to help them get to college.

  19. National Update • What’s next for KH2Go? Lumina funding came to an end in Dec. 2011 – Michigan was always a self-funded state. • Round 3 PSAs expired until February 1, 2013 • No additional PSAs will be produced • Website assets will continue to be available • Print Collateral – art files will continue to be available to produce at your own cost • Sticker decals • Key tags • Mentor workbook • T-shirts • Posters

  26. Introducing: It’s MI Life

  27. It’s MI Life • 2004 study conducted by Your Child revealed a significant disconnect between parents and teachers. • 2005 study revealed Michigan parents felt education was important but not essential. • Almost half of all parents(46%) don’t agree that everybody should have a college education. • About one-third of all parents (34%) don’t agree that people with a college education are usually better-off.

  28. It’s MI Life • Focus groups of 10th-12th graders in Southeast Michigan. • Michigan’s high school students know college is important to their future. They just want help navigating the path to that future. • While 5 out of 6 students say they plan to attend college, only 2 out of 6 are really likely to go. • Students are in search of easily accessible, personalized and meaningful advice.

  29. It’s MI Life • It’s MI Life was launched in 2009 as an effort to engage students directly in planning for life after high school. • Web portal: www.itsmilife.com, is a social network tied to envisioning a good life in the future, emphasizing higher education attainment as essential to having a good life. • Summer 2009: Pilot phase • 2010: Hiatus • 2011: MCAN approached • 2012: Relaunch
