  2. IntonationWhat is it & how is it used? Intonation is a change in the pitch of a word or sentence • Saying something with a higher or lower sound to give the word or sentence more meaning Most common uses is to indicated statements or questions.

  3. Statement • In an English statement, the intonation falls on the last content in the word • Examples: • I’m going to the store. • She wants to speak to him.

  4. Question • In a yes/no question, the intonation rises on the word about which the question is being asked. • Examples: • Are you going to the store? • Does she want to speak to him?

  5. Questions that begin with wh • wh questions have a special intonation pattern • These questions start with the question words • who, what, when, where, why, which, how • The intonation rises and then falls on the word about which the question is being asked • Examples: • Where are you going? • Whom does she want to talk to?
