We will go much deeper in our thinking using the following strategies. • Knowing/Wondering • Inferring • Synthesizing • Visualizing • Questioning • Determining Importance

  5. Electronic Readers • Students may bring electronic devices such as Kindles to use during reading class. • There is a form that must be completed before students can bring their devices. • Students may check out books for their devices from the Bolin library.

  6. Independent Reading… • Independent Reading Goals • Individual goals will be decided on in a conference between the student and me. • Students write in Reader’s Notebooks daily and participate in book discussions. • Read a variety of genres • Record books on reading log • Students will complete four reading reviews per 9 weeks for homework. • Students need to read their books nightly. (20-30minutes) • Students participate in the 40 Book Challenge

  7. Independent Reading Makes a Difference

  8. Dear families, Your child will be encouraged to participate in our 40 book Challenge this year. Let’s work together to help in reaching this goal! In class, I will assist students in choosing appropriate, appealing books for his or her reading level. Additionally, students will have reading time dedicated to self-selected reading each day. Students need to be reading for a minimum of 20 minutes each night. Students may shade in a square only after they have written the title of the book in the box and have listed it on their reading log. The 40 book chart must stay in your child’s binder at all times. There will be times when we will shade in books we have read in class. If a child does not have his or her sheet, they will not get to shade in for that book. The purpose of this activity is to challenge our kids to read a variety of books and instill a love of reading. Also, reading from a variety of genres has been proven the best way to improve as a reader. Let me know if you have further questions. Thank you for your support! Mrs. Engel
