LC DPT Mission The mission of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program is • to educate entry-level physical therapists • prepared to assume the role of health care practitioner • through the provision of competent, evidence-based practice in a variety of clinical settings; • and to promote active participation and effective leadership in all aspects of personal and professional life.

  6. What will the DPT program be like? • Three year continuous curriculum for full-time student cohort • Beginning Aug-Sept 2010 • Graduating Aug 2013 • Prepares a physical therapist to enter practice in many varied clinical settings

  7. DPT Curriculum • 120 semester hours of instruction • Begins with foundational sciences • Progresses into clinical sciences • 42 courses including 38 weeks of clinical practice

The LC DPT is Unique • Built from “what works”, leaving “what doesn’t” • Fosters a student-centered environment • Specially designed learning experiences • Students involved in Peer-Teaching • Integration of material from subjects • Material is integrated across the curriculum • Assessment integrated to mimic NPTE

  9. Clinical Experiences • 38 weeks total of individualized practice on real patients (National Average is 20.5 weeks) • Under supervision of licensed Physical Therapist • In various settings • In multiple facilities

Facility • More than 30,000 square feet dedicated to the DPT program, with room to expand • 24/7 student access • Fully wi-fi equipped • Less than 5 minutes walking distance from center of campus • State of the art dissection lab (up to 21 cadavers) • Fully equipped, classrooms • Fully equipped laboratory/skills area • Dedicated research area • All faculty offices housed in the DPT building

  13. Tuition Estimated to be ~$29,000 per year (Very near the National Average [2007] )

General Application Procedures • Baccalaureate degree (regionally/nationally accredited college/university) • Official transcripts with all coursework • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA overall and 3.0 cumulative GPA when factoring only science coursework • GRE scores (The Lynchburg College code is 5372) • Career goals statement (300-500 words) • 40 hours of practical experience under the direct supervision of a licensed physical therapist with verification by completed experience record (available September 1) • Two additional recommendation letters, at least one being from a licensed physical therapist (available September1)

Academic Pre-requisites Pre-requisite courses Sciences- 31 semester hours o 4 semester hours of biology with lab* o 8 semester hours of chemistry with lab* o 8 semester hours of physics with lab (non-calculus based)* o 4 semester hours of human anatomy with lab^ o 4 semester hours of human physiology with lab^ o 3 semester hours of advanced biology (includes histology, cell biology, micro-biology, or other courses which satisfy this requirement ) *= These courses should be equivalent to courses required in the science majors. ^ = Academic institutions offering human anatomy/physiology combination courses will suffice if both courses of sequence are completed; for example - four hours human anatomy/physiology I and four hours human anatomy/physiology II.

  16. Psychology- 6 semester hours Writing Intensive courses- 9 semester hours (Freshman composition and other writing intensive courses accepted.) Math- 6 semester hours o Pre-calculus or above o 3 semester hours of statistics The DPT admissions committee will review applicants' courses/coursework older than seven years to determine eligibility and approval for meeting the pre-requisite requirements. This will ensure that applicants with previous coursework have the necessary knowledge/skills to be successful in the DPT program.

  18. Accreditation • This multi-step process is underway. • All programs go through the same process. • 1st step- Application for Candidacy (in process) • No admitted students until Candidacy is approved. • Final accreditation decision shortly after 1st cohort graduation.

More accreditation info available www.APTA.org and search CAPTE or Accreditation Lynchburg College is seeking accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education of the American Physical Therapy Association (1111 North Fairfax Street, Alexandria, VA 22314; phone; 703-706-3245; accreditation@apta.org). The program will submit an Application for Candidacy, which is the formal application required in the pre-accreditation stage. Submission of this document does not assure that the program will be granted Candidate for Accreditation status nor does it assure that the program will be granted Accreditation.

  23. Tobacco Scholarship/Loan Program Up to $3,000/year for students in Southside Virginia (e.g., Appomattox, Bedford, Pittsylvania, Campbell, Danville). One year of service will qualify for one year of loan cancellation. Awarded first come, first serve and amount is subject to change based on fund availability.   24. Financial Aid: Federal Stafford Loans • You can borrow up to $20,500. No more than $8,500 of this amount may be in subsidized loans. • These amounts are the maximum yearly amounts you can borrow in both subsidized and unsubsidized. • The maximum total debt allowed from Stafford Loans is $138,500. No more than $65,500 of this amount may be in subsidized loans.

  25. Federal PLUS Loans for Graduate & Professional Degree Students • Graduate and professional degree students can borrow under the PLUS Loan Program up to their cost of attendance minus other estimated financial assistance. • You must not have adverse credit. • Repayment begins on the date of the last disbursement of the loan, with a fixed interest rate of 8.5 percent.

  26. Federal PLUS Loans for Graduate & Professional Degree Students Applicants for these loans are required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). They also must have applied for their annual loan maximum eligibility under the Federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loan Program before applying for a Graduate/Professional PLUS loan.
