  2. Nouns and definite articles pagina 11 • Nouns have gender in Spanish. • Either “el’ or “la”. • They both mean ‘the” • Most of the time words that end with an “a” are feminine • Most words that end with an “o” are masculine • Words that end with either “e” or consonants need to be learned.

Definite articles • El or la • “El” is masculine and “La” is feminine • Exceptions • Words that end in: • Dad (f) (la felicidad = the happiness) • Ion (f) ( la conversacion= the conversation) • Tad (f) (la libertad= the freedom) • Tud (f) ( la juventud= the youth) • Umbre (f) ( la cumbre = summit) • Words that start and end with an “a” are masculine, HOWEVER….their plural form are feminine ‘’ el agua Las aguas” • Words that end with “ista” are both feminine and masculine. • Words that end with “ ma”, “pa”, “ta” are masculine, that are non-concrete are masculine ( el clima –weather, el drama, el idioma = the language)
