  1. Mixing Mysteries Lindsey Cater

  2. Standard 2- Scientific Thinking • Standard 3.2.2-Measure and mix dry and liquid materials in prescribed amounts, following reasonable safety precautions. • Activity comes from: http://www.indianastandardsresources.org/files/sci/sci_3_2_2.pdf

  3. Definitions • Predict-To state, tell about, or make known in advance, especially on the basis of special knowledge. To foretell something. • Measure-    Dimensions, quantity, or capacity as ascertained by comparison with a standard. • Mixing-To combine or blend into one mass or mixture. • Definitions Taken From: http://kids.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/english/search

  4. Background Information • You need to know how to measure using measuring cups and measuring spoons. • You also need to know how to mix things together safely and accurately.

  5. Let’s Make Predictions! • What do you think happens to sugar when it is mixed with water? • What do you think happens to sand when it is mixed with water? • What do you think happens when vinegar and baking soda are mixed together?

  6. Materials Needed • Goggles • Clear containers • Measuring cups and spoons • Stirring sticks • Water • Vinegar • Sugar • Sand • Baking Soda • Paper Towels (For messes!) • Mixing Mysteries Worksheets

  7. Activity • You will be divided into groups of 3. Make sure each one of you has a pair of safety goggles and 3 copies of Mixing Mysteries Worksheet. • Make sure your group has 3 clear containers and a set of measuring cups and measuring spoons. • First we will mix together a cup of water and 4 tablespoons of sugar. • What happens to the sugar when you mix the sugar and the water together? Fill out your first worksheet using your observations.

  8. Activity (Cont.) • What do you think happens to sand when it is mixed with water? Write your prediction on the second worksheet. • Mix 1 cup of water with 4 tablespoons of sand. • What happens to the sand when it is mixed into the water? Draw a picture of what you observe and write your observations out on the worksheet.

  9. Activity (Cont.) • What do you think happens when you mix vinegar and baking soda? Write your prediction on the third worksheet. • Being careful, mix ½ of a cup of vinegar with 2 tablespoons of baking soda. • What happened when the baking soda and vinegar was combined? Draw and write your observation on the third worksheet.

  10. Questions • How was the sugar mixture different from the sand mixture? • Why didn’t the sand dissolve? • What made the vinegar mixture overflow?

  11. Assessment • What would you use to measure one cup of water? • A plain white bowl • Measuring spoons • Measuring cups • What does it mean to mix 2 things together? • Combine and blend • Roll into a ball • Flatten out like a pancake

  12. Assessment (Cont.) • What does it mean to predict? • To make a statement after you see something • To make a statement in advance • To think really hard • What helps keep you safe when doing a science experiment? • A television • Your t-shirt • Safety goggles
