  8. What is… • Tsunamis are waves created from underwater earthquakes. • 9.3 earthquake off the coast of sumatra. • Tsunamis are common in this part of the world due to the proximity to tectonic plates.

  9. When… • The Earthquake happened just before 1 AM. • Anytime there is an underwater earthquake a tsunami is expected but the area lacked a warning system. • The 2011 tsunami in Japan was created the same way.

  10. Time line • 9.3 earthquake at 00:58:53 AM. • 1300 foot long crack rose up about 20 feet from the sea bottom, pushing up water. • A wave of 24 meters or 80 feet was created. • 15 minutes later tsunami waves were hitting coastlines and continued for another 9 hours away.

  11. What causes this event? • This was called a mega thrust event. • Two plates are colliding and one pops up from the pressure.

  12. Who was affected? • Most generously and most immediate funded relief effort ever. • A total of $13.6 billion was donated. • 10.7 billion damage. • 230,000 dead (1/3 of that were children). • 2.1 million homeless.

Possible Warning • $53 million interim warning systems and towers installed, however not manned 24 hours a day. • Satellites picked up the wave but it took hours to analyze and confirm, not what the satellite was for. • Human destruction of coral reefs may have lessen the energy of the wave if they were present.

  15. Facts • Bodies were being recovered fro weeks, within a day the bodies were infested with bacteria and virus as well as smells overtaking the areas. • Water supply was ruined as well as food supplies.
