  1. This is Africa week “SANKOFA” We choose the African tradition of using wise sayings to present ourselves A bird with its head turned backwards taking an egg off its back

  2. SANKOFA A word of the Akan language of Ghana Literally translated as: "go back and take" (Sanko- go back, fa- take) It symbolises one taking from the past what is good and bringing it into the present in order to make positive progress through the use of that knowledge

  3. NAWESNetwork of Africa-European Women Scientists • A group of women with a past from Africa, who have entered the European arena and are thus both African and European. • A group that is made up of scientists with individual deep knowledge in various areas • A group that aims to take their collective knowledge from the past and bringing it into the present in which they find themselves

  4. Presentation of NAWES This inauguration of NAWES focuses on • insight into who the members are • the journeys that have brought us to this point where we acknowledge that working together as a group will better harness the good from the past and bring it into the present in order to make positive progress for the future in Sweden, Europe and Africa.

  5. Integrating and connecting Integrate not assimilate • A synonym for integrate is “join together” • A synonym for assimilate is “digest” or “absorb” • We the women in NAWES embrace our new home Sweden and we are committed to “joining together”/integrating our background knowledge with knowledge gained in Sweden, without being absorbed or digested without trace

  8. MY JOURNEY My journey has been long Because I belong to the humanity I belong to the beautiful grass-coated undulating hills of the South I belong to the beautiful snow covered landscapes of the North I belong to the world, to humanity. My journey has been long Through smooth and ragged terrain of the South and the North Why do I journey through the thicket of life? That is me, a woman. A woman of many worlds. A woman scholar? Yes, woman scholar across the seas and mountains Across the South and the North. Going back, I go back and take, like Sankofa I reclaim my past and move forward anew. My past and my present. It is a journey through the surreal and the temporal, location and dislocation The journey’s inherent contradictions are no deterrent. I go back and take, I go forward and confer Sankofa is not one-way, it is a dual heritage
