Early Experiences Began our collaborations with Continuing Education classes under Basic Skills Plus Support class for Medical Terminology Essential Provided initial insight into student bridging needs Additional insight from research guided the development of our model Orientation provided prior to registration

Pathway Orientation-Day 1 Meet in College and Career Readiness department Introductions Manage Expectations – class schedule, time, costs, location 2 days, 6 hours total personal readiness How to prepare - help students set the stage Think through backup plans for everything Goal setting and Time Management workshops Presentation by Admissions department Fill out paper applications

Orientation- Day 2 Meet on the campus where students’ classes will be held Note-taking and Using a College-level Textbook workshops Campus tour Pay student fees Purchase books Get student ID and take care of parking passes Set up Wake Tech students’ e-mail accounts Meet the teachers Navigators contact students via e-mail during the break to work out any problems with communication and answer any last minute questions.

Goals of Orientation Final vetting of students Manage student expectations Iron out transportation issues Familiarize students with the campus, classroom location, teachers and vocabulary Ensure procedural challenges won’t interfere with a smooth start Instruct students to pre-read first 2 chapters of their text before the first day of class

  6. TeamTeaching Pairs professional/technical instructor (curriculum) with adult educator to maximize student learning Collaborative endeavor that weaves together curriculum content and adult basic skills methodologies

  8. Six Team Teaching Models Traditional Collaborative Complementary/Supportive Parallel Differentiated Split Monitoring

  9. Traditional One instructor introduces content while the other instructor provides support and models learning strategies

  10. Collaborative Instructors exchange ideas and discuss ideas and theories in front of the learners. Back and forth dialogue about the content with each interjecting their thoughts and observations

  11. Complementary/Supportive One instructor presents content and the other provides follow up activities and related topics

  12. Parallel Class is divided into two groups with each instructor teaching the same content to their group

  13. Differentiated Split Class is divided into groups according to learner needs with each instructor providing instruction tailored to the students’ needs

  14. Monitoring One instructor delivers content while the other circulates and monitors students’ understanding and provides feedback

  15. Challenges Extensive planning time Reluctance to collaborate Unequal skill level of one of the instructors

  16. Benefits Models collaboration for students Offers a more complex understanding of the content when multiple perspectives are presented Different teaching styles of respective instructors can support learning styles of students
