Planning and Running a Campaign • Campaign Organization-The most important person is the campaign manager (besides the candidate) -The manager helps plan where to go, what to discuss, what image to put forth, & guides the work of others Lower-level managers: -in charge of volunteers - handle day-to-day campaigning work

Planning and Running a Campaign • Finding Out What the Public Thinks • Knowing what people want/think = successful campaign. • Poll Takers help candidate figure out what to talk about. • poll takers find out what issues voters think are important. • show the impact of campaigns in different states.

Planning and Running a Campaign • Managing and Using the Media • Campaign Press Secretary • Make sure media is there when candidate does good • Organize public appearences • Advertising • Radio • Newspaper • Television • Television has the best impact • Our responsibility is to find the types of propaganda techniques being used

  5. Financing a Campaign • Campaign Finance Law • Every election year the FEC offers money from this fund to each of the major candidates for the president. Once they accept these Public funds they cannot accept or spend money from others • Several laws create the rules for how an election can be financed (some of these are: ) • No person can donate $2000 to a candidate • Candidates must report the name of a voter who donates more than $200 (in every election)

Financing a Campaign • Criticism of Campaign Financing • Most people think elections cost to much • They say the high cost running for office keeps many good people from running • If the cost continues to rise only wealthy be able to afford running • They want to have all campaign finance entirely with public funds • candidates do not have raise funds privately

Who Wins an Election? • Our Goals • To elect the best leader • Make good decisions • Incumbents usually win re-elections • Unless an incumbent has made major mistakes, the challenger has a hard time!!! • ¼ of incumbents lost re-elections • Since WW2, 3 incumbents lost re-elections • For example, incumbent George W. Bush lost to President Bill Clinton in the 1992 election.

The Electoral College • How the Electoral College Works • Before election each party from each state makes a list of electors • President is chosen by vote in electoral collage • This is in the constitution • After the election the official election happensin each state • The elector does not have to vote for who the pledged by law (but most do) • Candidates need 270 or more elector votes to win • # of Electors is = # of members of the House of representatives + the # of Senators (2)

The Electoral College • The 2000 Election and the Electoral College • Over the years, people have charged the “winner takes all” • There was popular and electoral vote drama in 2000 • In 2004 President Bush won the re-election with 51% popular votes • Congress will continue to examine and debate methods of improving our electoral system
