  2. What Works? How we run a successful student “buddy” program at DIA ~Year 1 and Year 6 students' wellbeing~

  3. Why are we keen to buddy up? Building relationships Understanding friends Differentiating Diversity Inquiring minds Enriching school life Synergy....collaboration!

  4. Meet and Greet – first buddy session of the year

  5. Discussion between buddies about each others’ similarities and differences in support of the Year 1 Unit of inquiry “Who we are”. Year 6 students in turn, applied their mapping skills and sense of direction by creating detailed directions to guide Year 1 students to specific destinations around the school (“How we organize ourselves”).

  6. Connecting with and celebrating their host country and the local culture The students worked in a rotation through various activities relating to the UAE culture.

  7. Year 6 students created their own Math lesson which they then were responsible for teaching to their Year 1 buddy.

  8. Year 6 students shared their knowledge about the application of the Scientific Method after their own science inquiry. The students planted beans with their younger buddies and supported them with the procedural writing.

  9. It’s all about developing a special bond and not forgetting to enjoy the fun stuff…. “love rocks” in celebration of Valentine’s Day!

  11. Our vision • To promote anti-bullying through the provision of educational/media resources to all students regardless of race, class, religion, disability or gender.

  13. Current methods of approach • Currently, Friendship Ambassadors aim to bring our vision to student life through three important schemes: • Raising awareness. • Increasing education quality and opportunity. • Tackling the issue of bullying.

  14. Objectives for 2014 • Diminish bullying as a whole by the end of the academic year. • Create a safe haven for all children. • Create a voice for students who have been or still are bullied. • Tackle and solve all instances of bullying at DIA.

  15. Short-term objectives • Expand our initiative by 50+ new members. • Expand our initiative nationally to other schools. • Continue to raise awareness through social media. • To solve at least 40 cases of bullying.

  16. What we’ve done • Year level assemblies. • Homeroom pledges. • Friendship benches.
