Purpose Both are used to reduce the dimensionality of correlated measurements Can be used in a purely exploratory fashion to investigate dimensionality Or, can be used in a quasi-confirmatory fashion to investigate whether the empirical dimensionality is consistent with the expected or theoretical dimensionality Conceptually, very different analyses Mathematically, there is substantial overlap

Don't interpret components as factors or latent variables. Components are simply weighted composite variables They should be interpreted and called components or composites
