How would you like to incorporate sports or entertainment into your career? • Do you want to work as a lawyer who specializes in sports or entertainment work? • Do you want to be an in-house attorney for a team, league or company? • Do you want to be an agent? • Do you want to work in sports or entertainment in a different capacity?

  3. 1) Do you want to work as a lawyer who specializes in sports or entertainment work? • Conduct internship and job searches for firms which have a sports or entertainment law division • Many firms have a sports or entertainment division like Proskauer Rose • Michael Schiavone (SUCOL ’81) – Lipsitz Green Schime & Cambria – Corporate Counsel for the Buffalo Bills

  4. 2) Do you want to be an in-house attorney for a team, league or company? • Most large companies, teams or leagues have in-house legal counsel • Most of these jobs are obtained after doing previous work for that entity or establishing contacts with them • It is all about doing good work and who you know • Some of these large entities have legal internships and this information can be found on their websites • Gregg Brandon (SUCOL ’96) – Collegiate Images – Vice President and General Counsel

  5. 3) Do you want to be an agent? • Do not have to be a lawyer to be an agent • Most agencies are very small operations and do not offer internships • Some of the larger agencies like IMG and Octagon do offer opportunities for students • Extremely competitive industry and difficult to break into • David Falk (Syracuse ’72)

  6. 4)Do you want to work in sports or entertainment in a different capacity? • Law degrees are thought very highly of in the business world and you can translate your legal background into a variety of careers • Whatever industry you are interested in probably has internships, but be prepared that you will not likely be doing any legal work in your job • Hiring decisions on most non-legal internships are not made until late Spring • Consider the fact you can obtain another graduate degree at Syracuse, for no additional cost, while you are in law school • MBA (Whitman School) • Media Management (Newhouse School)

  7. How to succeed • Networking – jobs and internships are very difficult to come by and knowing the right people can make the difference • Differentiate yourself – get a dual degree, join a journal, etc. • Grades –what sets you apart when going for a law job • Focus on classes like IP, Sports/Entertainment Law, Contracts, etc. • Know what you want and be persistent
