Salvador Dali 1904-1989 Dali’s Childhood Dali was  raised in the small farming community of Figueras, Catalogna, Spain. Dali was one of three children. His older brother died before he was born. His parents believed Dali was the reincarnation of his dead older brother.

  2. Dali’s Childhood • Dali was  raised in the small farming community of Figueras, Catalogna, Spain. • Dali was one of three children. • His older brother died before he was born. • His parents believed Dali was the reincarnation of his dead older brother. • He was the son of a wealthy notary.

  3. Educating a Legend • He took his first drawing lessons at age ten. • Dali attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. • He never graduated from the academy • Refused to take final exams • Claimed he was more qualified that the ones who were administering the exams

  4. The Artist Revealed • His first exhibition was in a family apartment. • His first solo exhibition took place in Barcelona in 1925. • Dali’s paintings were first shown in America in 1928. • He had gained international acclaim by the age of 24.

  5. Gala • Dali met Gala in the early 1930’s. • Gala became Dali’s companion, muse, and even model for some of his paintings. • Dali and Gala were married in 1934. • She managed Dali’s business affairs while they were married. • Gala died in 1982, leaving Dali in a state of deep depression.

Dali’s End • After Gala’s death Dali moved to Pubul (a castle he decorated for Gala). • Not long after moving into Pubul, a fire broke out and Dali was severely burned, but he survived. • Two years later he had a pacemaker implanted. • Dali died in 1989 in the tower of his museum from heart failure.
