  1. SuperZoom Digital Cameras SIBMUG Meeting August 17, 2007 Presented by: Stan DeWitt dewittsc@yahoo.com

  2. What is a SuperZoom Camera? • A camera with greater than three times (3x) optical zoom lens. (Usually it is greater than or equal to 10x). • Usually the image sensor will be greater than six megapixels. (Allows for capture of more detail in photos.) • Great for nature shots, sports, or any other situation where you can’t physically get close to your desired subject.

  3. Does That Mean EXPENSIVE? • Not necessarily. Prices start at $225 and go up from there depending on features. • Memory card prices have been dropping and capacities continue to rise, so image storage is no longer a problem. • Don’t you need an expensive color printer to print out your photos? NO!

4. Printing/Viewing Options • Most stores no whave digital printing options right in the store. • Good color home printers are now fairly inexpensive (Depends on picture size). • Photo paper continues to be expensive. • Investigate picture sharing options such as Shutterfly.com, Fotki.com, etc. Bottom line: Sharing photos with on-line griends and relatives is not expensive.

  5. Detailed look at Fuji S700 • S700 is range-finder camera that handles as a Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera. • It is bulkier than a simple “Point and Shoot” camera. • Image sensor is 7.1 megapixels. • 10x zoom lens (38mm – 380mm 35mm equivalent). • It was used to take the images we’ll look at tonight.

  6. Fuji S700 Specifications • 2.5” LCD (back display) or Electronic View Finder (EVF) switchable by user. • Uses either xD or Secure Digital (SD) memory cards up to 2 GB in capacity. • Six different image recording sizes (1 -7MB). • ISO range 64-1600 (film speed). • Metering: Spot, Averaging, or Auto (256 zones).

  7. Fuji S700 Specs (Cont’d) • Image Stabilization is optionally available. • Shutter speed range: 1/1000 to 3 seconds. • Macro capability (close-ups): Down to 0.4 inches. • Weight - 14.1 oz. (with batteries and card). • Size – 4.2 x 3.0 x 3.2 inches. • Also has limited movie capability. • Can add narration sound to images.

  8. Other Brands Available • Sony Cybershot DSC-H9. • 8 MP, 15x zoom, image stabilization. • Panasonic Lumix DMC-Z50. • 10 MP, 12x zoom, image stabilization. • Canon PowerShot S5. • 8MP, 12x zoom, image stabilization. • Olympus SP-550 UZ • 7.1 MP, 18x zoom, image stabilization.

9. Recommendations • You may want to check out some of these models further if you are interested in high zoom capability. • Also check out some photo sharing options. I recommend that you use one of these sites to display snapshots and then only print out 8 x 10’s or other large sizes of the best images. • Might want to check out Fuji’s S8000fd available next month. (18 x zoom under $400).

  10. For More Information • Use any web search engine, enter “digital super-zoom cameras, and browse through the results. • Next check out the reviews on any camera that seems promising. • Go to a store (WalMart, Ritz Camera, Circuit City, Best Buy, etc.) to get some experience with size, accessibility of features, etc. Then BUY the one you want.
