  2. What is literacy? • We defined literacy and different types of literacy on the web. We also defined this in class • We did this to expand our notion to move beyond a “reading of words” concept of the term

  3. Key terms in Literacy and New Media • Words included: • Theory: is a way of seeing • Social theories: perspectives that center attention on phenomena and their connections to the broader society and a wide range of institutions, discourses, and practices.

Critical forms of learning designs • Youtube • Computer clubhouse • Digital Underground – DUSTY • Digital Technologies for Media Ethnographies You have been reading chapters that are grounded in a concept of Critical Pedagogy. Critical pedagogy is a pedagogy that focuses on using curriculum to challenge and question power and social justice. Moreover, it attempts to connect learning with the real world situations of our learners.

  5. Learning Design Assignment: • After a few of classes our conversations have moved toward an idea of designing a learning environment with the following underlying principles:

  6. The assignment for this course will be different than those noted in the syllabus. You will be designing a lesson that incorporates some form of media (images, video) to support a curricular goal. The elements of this lesson are as followings: • Adheres to the design principles • Uses images as a way to see, interpret, produce, or use the content (in a critical way) • Allows students to question their assumptions about aspects of the content. • Your goal is to consider how the elements of this course integrate into your teaching a lesson or unit.

  7. Implement the learning design • Design a learning environments (goals, activities, assessments) • This design should include the ideas from Slide 7 and 8 • You should keep a journal so that you can reflect on the process: • What new literacies were evident in the lesson? • What were the aspects of critical media consumption, production, or use did you incorporate in your lesson? • How does the design reflect a critical pedagogical model? • How did the design reflect our foundational principles? • What went well? • What were the challenges? • How were students engaged differently (effectively or ineffectively)? • This should also include student work analysis: • You will complete an analysis of work generated by your implemented critical/new literacy/pedagogy application. • Analysis will include samples of critical/new literacy practices.
